Essential Job Functions
Campus Dining is seeking a Cook to join our team and assist in preparation, oversight, and serving of meals.
Duties of the position may include:

  • Follow menus, standardized recipes, and production sheets.
  • Prepare large quantities of food according to specifications including effective time management.
  • Operate commercial food equipment.
  • Follow health laws in the preparation, holding, and storing of food.
  • Restock areas on the line and maintain clean, orderly kitchen area
  • Performs final preparation of food
  • Writes prep lists and gathers ingredients and equipment prior to production.
  • Informs chef of any needs, and assists ensuring their product is on hand before it's needed.
  • Adapt to changing circumstances, able to perform a number of tasks at various stations or locations as needed.
  • Interact with customers and staff positively to provide excellent service.
  • Maintain a professional clean and organized work space as well as personal appearance


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
The Cook position requires the knowledge of:

  • This position requires the knowledge of culinary principles, practices, and procedures of food service production.
  • Basic math skills and ability to scale recipes.
  • Knowledge of NC Health Department food and safety standards.
  • Team player attitude is required.
  • Initiative to work beyond what is requested within the unit to achieve business goals of quality and service standards.
  • Ability to interact effectively with coworkers of diverse ages, backgrounds, and interests.
  • Ability to work as a team member under rushed conditions without loss of efficiency or effectiveness.
  • Care for knives and tools, ensure sharpness and storage and safe use of knives, tools, and equipment.
  • Must perform consistent knife cuts.
  • Must cook to order with proper appearance, taste, quality, texture.
  • Must Follow simple recipes, and maintain established work flows
  • Cooks multiple food items at the same time without a loss of quality.
  • Ability to plan personal production and set themselves up for success. Mise en Place.
  • Ensure utilization of proper PPE, and monitoring equipment and logs.

Preferred Qualifications
2+ years of related experience;
Culinary School/ ACF Certification; and
Obtain ServSafe certification within 1 year of employment

Summer hours may vary depending on the business need. All ASU Food Service employees are required to work during home football games or any other special campus event as needed. Campus work location may vary depending on the event.

Required Functional Competencies to Successfully Perform Job Duties.
Knowledge-Technical: Ability to follow menu guidelines, standardized recipes, and production sheets. Understands preparation of large quantities of food and prepares accordingly so as not to over or under produce. Operates equipment according to guidelines. Checks the finished product for flavor, temperature, appearance, and garnish before serving to customers. Preps food as needed for the next day or meal. Follows health laws in the preparation, holding, and storing of food.

Safety & Health Compliance: Practices good personal hygiene by coming to work clean, no body odor, appropriate hair restraint, clean shaven or beard/mustache no longer than 1/8 inch, no nail polish, jewelry must follow guidelines. Hands washed, sanitary gloves worn/changed, and food handled according to state health laws. Foods stored according to state health laws by keeping hot foods above 145 degrees F and cold foods below 45 degrees F with raw meats stored below cooked meats daily. Properly labels all foods including leftovers to indicate dates and cooking methods. Clean work area maintained by removing dirt/dust/stains, wiping up spills quickly. Storing and labeling cleaning supplies appropriately.

Customer Service: Responds to requests from fellow employees promptly and courteously. In order to achieve excellent customer service in our units there are positive behaviors that we want to demonstrate such as good eye contact, positive image, as well as friendly and prompt service. There are also behaviors that we do not want to demonstrate such as eating, drinking, reading, excessive talking, cell phone usage, or using tobacco products while not on your scheduled break. Attentive to duties. Routine complaints handled according to guidelines. Information about foods and preparation techniques offered to customers. Correct and precise explanations / directions offered to customers as required.
