Job Purpose

The Pollution Prevention (P2+) Lead is responsible for ensuring full compliance with JEST and JEST2 PWS requirements for Pollution Prevention (P2), Outreach, Remediation, and other multimedia support for JSC and its associated sites. The position will serve as training coordinator and also support the Projects Team in their review of environmental impacts of projects, as needed.

Duties & Responsibilities

Pollution Prevention (P2):

  • Ensure compliance with Waste Reduction Policy Act (WRPA) requirements for four sites (JSC, EF, SCTF, EPFOL), including annual reporting.
  • Prepare and maintain pollution prevention plans for all small and large quantity generators to be submitted to the State.
  • Track monthly waste generation amounts and new hazardous waste codes that may trigger 30-day P2 plan revisions and resubmittals to the State.
  • Coordinate and track progress of identified P2 projects throughout the sites.
  • Assess new opportunities to reduce hazardous waste generation through pollution prevention projects.
  • Generate and compile quarterly and annual Recycling Reports.
  • Update standard operating procedures for the Pollution Prevention Program and Recycling Reports

Outreach/Training:

  • Manage tabling events and present environmental information.
  • Compose environmental newsletter(s).
  • Generate quarterly regulatory review reports.
  • Update training materials and manage the JEST Training program.
  • Submit Award Nominations for JEST environmental accomplishments.
  • Post environmental news to JSC Roundup, as needed.
  • Generate environmental blogs and bulletin board topics.
  • Support Center composting efforts.
  • Perform Quarterly JE website updates.
  • Support other media areas, as needed.

Projects:

  • Evaluate JF1138 Environmental Checklists for compliance.
  • Manage assigned projects in an internal database.
  • Review Facilities database for project-related information for compliance.
  • Coordinate with other Media Leads for project-related issues.
  • Review engineering design drawings and specifications and provide environmental comments as needed

Remediation/Restoration:

  • Provide oversight and support to the JSC Remediation Program, in accordance with Federal and State regulatory requirements and NASA policies. Support could include but is not limited to, responding to NASA and regulatory agency data calls, oversight of field work, escorting, inspections, and reporting.

Other Duties:

  • Function as the Spill Response Lead for Onsite Emergencies (on a rotating basis)
  • Support training efforts for JEST personnel
  • Support other JEST team members in environmental compliance as needed
Requirements

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor of Science (B.S) degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Earth Science or other related science field. An advanced degree may be substituted for years of experience.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience
  • Must be willing to learn new tasks
  • Must be eligible for unescorted access to a federal facility, which normally requires (a) U.S. citizenship or permanent residency (green card), and (b) no felony convictions.

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced degree and/or additional experience is a plus.
  • Experience with other environmental regulatory programs is a plus.
