ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Performs judicial functions of the Arvada Municipal Court consistent with the Code of Judicial Conduct and the charter and ordinances of the City of Arvada.
- Sits as a relief judge of the court to adjudicate traffic, criminal, parking, and other municipal code violations.
- Conducts hearings on motions, trials to the court, jury trials, and other requisite judicial duties.
- Promotes an organizational work environment where business practices, decisions, and work assignments are aligned with the City's vision, mission, values, core competencies and strategic plan.
- Exercises sound judgment and decision making within the scope of assigned authority.
- Demonstrates leadership and initiative in the course of performing the duties of the position.
- Demonstrates a respectful attitude towards customers and coworkers that promotes professionalism, teamwork, open communication, and effective customer service.
- Acts with the customer in mind, responds to requests promptly and provides effective services or solutions for customers.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Strong knowledge of the Arvada Municipal Code, Colorado Rules of Evidence, the Colorado Rules of Criminal Procedure, the Colorado Rules of Municipal Procedure, and the general ordinance, statutory, and case law in Colorado.
- Strong knowledge of the principles and procedures of municipal, civil, business law, and constitutional law.
- Strong knowledge of judicial procedure and Colorado and federal rules of evidence.
- Thorough knowledge of local ordinances, state and federal laws, and constitutional provisions affecting municipal operations.
- Solid knowledge of financial and budget development and management procedures.
- Ability to effectively communicate information, both verbally and in writing, to support organizational objectives and interact with all levels of personnel within the city in a positive and cooperative manner.
- Ability to work with various personalities that may appear before the court, and craft appropriate decisions and sentences within legal guidelines.
- Ability to work with other departments on procedures and ordinances consistent with judicial independence.

Qualifications - Working Environment / Minimum Qualifications

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES: The work environment/physical activities described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. Work is primarily performed in an office environment with low noise levels. Physical effort and activities include: No physical effort above and beyond what is normally required for work primarily performed in an office environment. MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, LICENSE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE): College degree and graduation from a nationally accredited school of law; licensed member of the Colorado State Bar Association in good standing; five (5) years of experience as an attorney specializing in criminal law either as a prosecutor or a criminal defense attorney; and extensive knowledge of Colorado criminal procedure and law. Must be a resident of Arvada or become a resident of Arvada within six (6) months of appointment. Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.
