BHC Alhambra Hospital is located in the beautiful city of Rosemead, California. Our 115 bed facility established in 1924 prides itself on upholding a standard of excellence that allows our patients to take the first step to recovery. BHC Alhambra Hospital is a private, fully accredited, full-service acute psychiatric hospital serving children, adolescents and adults. BHC Alhambra is dedicated to providing quality behavioral health, substance abuse, and eating disorder treatment. We offer inpatient, residential, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient options for individuals in the communities of the San Gabriel Valley, Los Angeles County, and surrounding areas.

The Assessment & Referral Counselor is responsible for facilitating facility admissions by performing initial triage screening, assessment and referral activities for all in-coming and potential patients, consulting with potential patients, patient families, medical staff and other hospital staff, and counseling patients and patient families with regard to current assessments, recommended referrals and recommended required levels of care. The Assessment & Referral Counselor will gather clinical data, assign primarily diagnostics, and deliver case presentations to payers for payment, as well retro-authorizations and admission denials. Preferred candidate will have strong business, clinical, and customer service skills. Those who excel in this position are able to multi-task and stay organized while processing documents, completing data entry, and working with key departments in the hospital.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Work with medical and clinical referral sources to quickly and efficiently screen potential patients for appropriateness and acceptance.
  • Work with those who walk in seeking services and evaluate for potential admission.
  • Conduct in-person triage assessment of potential patients, and communicates that assessment to doctors and nursing staff.
  • May serve as a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP).
  • Obtain and records accurate documentation for each call including clinical description, referral sources, demographic information, financial/insurance information and follow-up requirements.
  • Recommend appropriate referrals based on patient condition, and communicates referrals to the Assessment & Referral Director and to the appropriate facility staff.
  • Counsel patients and families in regard to recommended levels of care, community resources, and financial arrangements.
  • Respond appropriately to telephone inquiries, providing accurate information, complete pre-admission screening, empathic crisis intervention and determining suitable referral.
  • Process all requests for information to all referral sources.
  • Provide customer and requested information and external referrals.
  • Assist with providing facility tours to physicians and prospective patients and families.
  • Assist with arranging the admission of patients, notify the business office, begin verifying benefit coverage, initiate calls to physicians/licensed practitioners as required, and complete admission packets.

Requirements:

Education: LPT, master's degree, or doctorate in social work, psychology, counseling or a related field.

Experience: A minimum of two (2) years experience in a mental health setting preferred. Working knowledge of the Addiction & Recovery field and experience in clinical interviewing, patient assessment, family motivation, treatment planning, communicating with external review organizations or comparable entities, and working effectively with people of diverse backgrounds, preferred.
