Minimum Qualifications
The Marketing and Supply Chain Management Department at Appalachian State University invites applications for the tenure track Director of the Professional Selling Program position beginning Fall of 2025.

  • Qualified candidates will have completed a PhD/DBA in Marketing from an AACSB accredited university and have 5 or more years of industry sales and experience teaching Advanced Sales and Professional Selling.


Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)
The department is especially interested in candidates with professional experience and teaching interest in Advanced Sales and Professional Selling.

Successful candidates should have demonstrated experience of one or more of the following:

1. Demonstrated track record of research and publication focused on professional selling, sales management, and/or sales education

2. Experience coaching students to compete at regional, national and international collegiate sales competitions

3. Participation with/contributions to a strong university sales education program and extracurricular sales education activities

4. Proficiency at initiating and maintaining strong industry/professional relationships and partnerships which positively impact students both inside and outside the classroom

5. 10 or more years of direct business-to-business sales and/or sales management experience outside of academia.

Description of the Department or Unit
We are a vibrant community of teachers, scholars, and professional practitioners that are passionate about developing the next generation of business leaders.
Marketing & Supply Chain Management is currently the largest department (in terms of undergraduate degree seeking students) of six departments within the John A. Walker College of Business. Business students may choose from three marketing concentrations - General Marketing, Digital Marketing or Professional Selling. The department also offers minors in professional selling (for business majors), digital marketing (for business and non-business majors), sales (for non-business majors) and general marketing (for non-business majors).
Additionally, business students can also earn a Supply Chain Management major or minor. Graduate level courses are offered in the MBA / MS in Analytics program. The Walker College of Business is the largest public business schools for undergraduate students in the University of North Carolina System.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of the Professional Selling Program will be responsible for all aspects of the program. Additionally, the Director of the Professional Selling Program will teach upper-level sales courses.
Primary teaching duties will involve in-person courses and holding office hours on the Boone, NC campus.

Teaching duties may also include online and/or hybrid courses, or in-person courses.
The Director of the Professional Selling Program will be responsible for all aspects of the
Professional Selling program. Additionally, the Director of the Professional Selling Program will teach upper-level sales courses. Primary teaching duties will be in-person courses and holding office hours on the Boone, NC campus.

ABD Description
ABD with reduction in rank and salary: ABD will be considered for this position. Evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire or November 30 for a spring hire. If confirmation of defense is not provided by the deadline, the candidate will receive a new one-year fixed-term contract and be hired at the rank of Instructor. The candidate's salary will also be reduced to a lower rate commensurate with other full-time instructors in the same department. However, if degree verification is provided before the end of the one-year fixed-term contract, the candidate will be returned to the rank of assistant professor with commensurate compensation beginning July 1 of the following academic year.

No ABD consideration: Only candidates with an earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution will be considered for the position. Since ABD will not meet the minimum requirements, ABD will not be considered.
