Job Summary

The Phlebotomy Supervisor supervises staff performing laboratory support services, for 1-2 labs. Staff performs work such as phlebotomy, specimen collection, labeling, glass washing, processing and delivery. Responsible for meeting quality assurance standards as defined in the laboratory operating procedures; Supervise the duties of Hospital Lab Technician I, and Hospital Lab Technician II Phlebotomists in phlebotomy; Assist with managing and supervising Hospital Lab Technician I, Hospital Lab Technician II, and Hospital Assistant 2 in Central Processing when needed; Provide instruction related to tests, billing, and information result inquiry and reporting, courier service, etc.; Act as an ongoing liaison between the laboratory and all non-hospital sites submitting specimens; Follow-up on problems related to all aspects of the client and laboratory relationship; Monitor storage area, freezers and refrigerators temperature daily; Monitor supplies according to phlebotomy needs; Resolve problems associated with the phlebotomy section; Monitor attendance, accurately record sick leave usage, and tardiness; Arrange replacement coverage when a schedule employee is unable to work; Ensure employees are notified about changes in laboratory procedures; Maintain the weekly workstation rotation schedule; Review and conduct performance evaluations on HLTs; Participate in screening applicants for jobs and provide input in selection process; Perform additional duties, project, and/or special assignments when requested.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $69,700 - $149,900 (Annual Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • Graduation from high school and/or a General Education Diploma and 3 years of clinical laboratory experience or a combination of education and experience, and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations
  • Knowledge of laboratory processing concepts, procedures, processes, and equipment
  • Knowledge of relevant industry, health and safety, federal, and state regulations
  • Knowledge of human resources management practices and policies
  • Ability to lead and mentor staff effectively
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated effective oral and written communication
  • Skill using laboratory information system and business software
  • Skill performing data checks
  • Ability to evaluate issues and identify solutions
  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships
  • Strong customer services skills
  • Highly proficient with standard Microsoft office programs, including Outlook, calendar management, Word and Excel. Ability to run analytical reports and to summarize data
  • Maintain high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
    Excellent organization skills, ability to work independently without immediate supervision, and ability to work successfully with others to coordinate and perform multiple project and tasks while juggling multiple deadlines and competing priorities to complete projects within agreed time frame
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills and able to successfully interact with multidisciplinary team members and the public. All communications are conducted in a professional, courteous, and helpful manner
  • Remain courteous and organized under pressure
  • Prior work experience handling confidential information with discretion and tact, and in compliance with HIPAA requirements
  • Excellent writing and editing skills with and overall successful verbal and written communications skills, and accuracy with numbers, statistics and analysis
  • Ability to exercise professional judgement in handling sensitive and confidential issues with discretion
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and excellent spelling skills
  • Proven record of reliability and attendance
  • Able to speak and write English clearly

Preferred Qualifications


  • Solid working knowledge of Adobe Pro, Visio, and Power Point
  • Previous experience in healthcare, clinical or research environment

License/Certification


  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT I) certification
