The AJC's mission is to be the most essential and engaging source of news and information for the people of Atlanta, of Georgia and the South. We are looking for a Deputy Managing Editor, Opinion to reimagine our approach from top-to-bottom, building on our storied history of serving as a leading voice of the South. We need a fluid and succinct writer who enjoys arguing civilly - and can present our work in new and innovative ways, such as audio, video and podcasts and potentially live events. We're looking for a strategic thinker who can guide and create meaningful and memorable work - a proven editor who can highlight solutions and produce high-quality opinion journalism that makes a difference in our communities.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and produce compelling opinion journalism that provides perspective, authority, and insight while advocating for a better Atlanta and South.
  • Hold public officials accountable, highlight solutions, and celebrate successes across the region.
  • Build and elevate a diverse community of new and established opinion writers.
  • Develop and implement new editorial formats and publishing techniques.
  • Present complex topics in a clear, compelling, and accessible way.
  • Select editorial topics, craft persuasive arguments, and write impactful opinion pieces.
  • Create and oversee digital content, including video, audio, and podcasts.
  • Arrange and participate in editorial board meetings.
  • Conduct in-depth reporting to support well-reasoned arguments.
  • Foster community engagement and invite readers to help shape our opinion coverage.
  • Engage regularly with the public and regional leaders both digitally and in person.
  • Develop and manage forums for civil, thoughtful discussion in print, online, and at AJC events.
  • Ensure our opinion content remains focused on local issues that inform, surprise, and engage readers.
  • Collaborate across the newsroom to deliver a compelling mix of editorial topics.
  • Select nationally syndicated columnists and letters to the editor.
  • Solicit diverse community voices for engaging op-eds.
  • Work closely with our Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist.

  • Exceptional writing, research, and editorial judgment.
  • Strong ability to work under deadline pressure.
  • Ability to balance quick-turn editorial pieces with in-depth projects.


Qualifications:

  • Education & Experience:

    • Bachelor's degree with 10+ years of relevant experience.
    • Master's degree with 8+ years of experience.
    • Ph.D with 5+ years of experience will also be considered.
    • Alternatively, 14+ years of total relevant experience.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement new editorial formats.
  • At least two years of experience managing opinion/editorial content preferred.
  • Strong background in digital media.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and presentation skills.
  • Familiarity with reader research and audience engagement strategies.
  • Ability to adapt and take on additional assignments as needed.

USD 108,800.00 - 181,400.00 per year

Compensation:

Compensation includes a base salary of $108,800.00 - $181,400.00. The base salary may vary within the anticipated base pay range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate's knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include an incentive program.

Benefits:

The Company offers eligible employees the flexibility to take as much vacation with pay as they deem consistent with their duties, the company's needs, and its obligations; seven paid holidays throughout the calendar year; and up to 160 hours of paid wellness annually for their own wellness or that of family members. Employees are also eligible for additional paid time off in the form of bereavement leave, time off to vote, jury duty leave, volunteer time off, military leave, and parental leave.
