The Canine Assisted Experiential Therapist (ET) functions as part of the multidisciplinary treatment team, with demonstrated experience and oversight of Canine Assisted intervention (CAI) programming, based on patient/resident needs. The Canine Assisted Experiential Therapist supervises canine volunteer staff under the direction of clinical services leadership. Essential Duties:
  • Design and implement individual Canine assisted interventions, including education on techniques to enable patients to access the beneficial aspects of pet intervention Integrate pet assisted interventions into treatment planning through collaboration and communication with clinical program treatment team.
  • Supervise Volunteer Canine comfort Teams to maintain clinical direction throughout the designated campus.
  • Facilitate individual interventions on designated programs.
  • Work with research and foundation teams to develop tools and gather data for outcome studies.
  • Assist in education on facility dogs, canine comfort (pet therapy), service dogs, and emotional support dogs. Provide learning opportunities system wide.
  • Care for Facility Dog, in accordance with the Association of Animal-Assisted Intervention Professions, Intermountain Therapy Animals, and facility dog training organization the canine was received from, including but not limited to:
    • Provide safe and secure work environment placing canine needs first.
    • Provide safe and secure home environment outside of work hours
    • Maintain overall health needs including but not limited to annual vet appointments, required grooming schedule according to infection control, dog license.
    • Manage all aspects of purchasing and of all needs for the facility dog through Roger's procedure process. Picking up of those supplies' medications etc.
    • Coordinate care when or continue to provide care during PTO, Holidays, time off situations
    • Provide safe transportation to and from work.
    • Remain current on certification and training needs
    • Support and facilitate relationship with facility dog training organization
    • Provide enrichment and training activities for the facility dog.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Joint Commission and other regulatory agency compliance guidelines.
  • Programming.
    • Conduct experiential therapy individual sessions as ordered/scheduled.
    • Evaluate, plan and coordinate programming to meet patients'/residents' needs.
    • Maintain Experiential Therapy environments for safety and supplies.
    • Be flexible with work assignments, including schedule changes and program additions.
    • Have a good working knowledge of a variety of expressive therapies, evidenced based approaches and how CAI impacts other disciplines.
    • Coordinate and aid in implementing group CAI sessions across the campus.
    • Demonstrate a willingness to perform any/all duties within the capacity of one's job and/or professional credentials.
  • Documentation/Treatment.
    • Complete a treatment plan and evaluation according to Experiential Therapy policy/ standard work (SW).
    • Complete therapeutic documentation according to Experiential Therapy policy/SW.
    • Complete additional documentation for Outcome study research.
    • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to collect and review information regarding the patient's/resident's status to identify age-specific needs. Provide interventions that are appropriate to the developmental age of the patient/resident population served.
  • Patient/resident knowledge.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of intervention strategies and utilize redirection when necessary to maintain patients'/residents' safety.
    • Monitor patient/resident behavior and safely intervene appropriately, using de-escalation techniques and least-restrictive measures possible.
    • Establish a therapeutic rapport with patient/resident groups, while maintaining appropriate, professional relationships.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of psychosocial functioning of each patient/resident group. Know the common diagnostic categories and their relationship to patients'/residents' behavior within the setting. Demonstrate knowledge of treatment procedures/models (behavioral, recovery, etc.) and application within a therapy setting.
  • Staff requirements.
    • Attend all mandatory in-services and other in-services relevant to the position. Be responsible for all educational requirements and related obligations pertaining to the license of the program/unit license regulatory requirements governing the program(s).
    • Complete all required orientation competencies and training within the Experiential Therapy department and Hospital-wide.
    • Attend Experiential Therapy department and program staff meetings, as required.
    • Meet with the manager of Experiential Therapy monthly regarding clinical guidance, training, program evaluation and problem reporting.
    • Conduct program-specific programming off Hospital grounds, following procedures for using Rogers owned vehicles, for designated patient populations.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Education/Training Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in animal sciences or recreational therapy, master's degree preferred.
  • Certification/registration through appropriate credentialing boardpreferred.
  • Employees at the Child/Adolescent Day Treatment programs licensed under HFS *40 are required to have at least one (1) year of educational or work experience and a licensure or certification when serving children with mental health disorders.
  • Valid driver license. Must be granted insurable status by the Rogers Memorial Hospital insurance policy.
  • American Heart Association CPR certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Training in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) within 60 days of hire.
  • Applicable to Experiential Therapy pool and Experiential Therapy fixed FTE staff dedicated to a residential cost center: Compliance inResidential Care Centers (RCC)andCommunity Based Residential Facility (CBRF)employee training requirements.
  • Handling and Training Dogs: This involves physical activities such as walking, running, and playing with the dogs, as well as training them to perform specific tasks.
