Position Announcement

The Applied Sociology and Criminal Justice Department at Utah Tech University (UT) in St. George, Utah invites applications for a full-time Instructor of the Practice in Sociology faculty position with an emphasis in Applied Sociology to begin July 1, 2025. The preferred candidate will possess a minimum of a Master's degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Sociology or closely related field. The successful candidate will be expected to teach Introduction to Sociology, Gender in Contemporary Society, Sexuality in Society, Sociology of Racial and Ethnic Relations, Research Methods as well as other courses in the Applied Sociology Curriculum. Instructors of Practice at UT are full-time, continuing teaching positions that do not carry with them service or scholarship expectations. Instructors of Practice are often considered the University's "master teachers."

Responsibilities

  • Teach 30 credits per academic year within the Applied Sociology program, usually assigned as 15 credit hours (5 courses) per academic semester. Teaching responsibilities include lower-division sociology courses (Introduction to Sociology, Social Problems, Gender in Contemporary Society, Sexuality in Society, Sociology of Racial and Ethnic Relations), select upper-division sociology courses (deviance, globalization, organizations, stratification, methods), and other sociology courses related to the successful candidate's specialty.
  • Develop and teach appropriate courses in applied sociology, consistent with the applicant's background and expertise.
  • Adhere to department, college, and university policies and performs campus-wide faculty responsibilities, including:
    • Develop course materials in accordance with University expectations, including syllabi that contain course learning outcomes, assignments and other student success measures, and a complete schedule for the course.
    • Use the Canvas course management system.
    • Hold office hours.
    • Advise and mentor program students.
    • Attend department, division, college and university meetings and events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Sociology (or closely related field) from an accredited college or university required; PhD in Sociology preferred.
  • A background in applied sociology preferred.
  • A commitment to, and evidence of, excellence in undergraduate teaching.
  • The ability to supervise and mentor undergraduates in scholarship, especially in ways that benefit the institution and surrounding community through the application of sociological principles.
  • An eagerness and ability to engage with colleagues, staff, and administrators to develop ways to improve the educational experience of UT students, both within the Applied Sociology program and within the local community.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills.

Supplemental Information

POSITION DETAILS, COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:Full-time (9-month) tenure-track or professional-track faculty position. Faculty service begins August 2025, with pay and benefits starting July 1, 2025. Annual salary of $53,000-$56,000 depending on qualifications and experience, with additional compensation available for optional summer/overload teaching.
