Summary
Under the general direction of the Laboratory Managers and Medical Director, this position is responsible for staff orientation, training, competency assessment, and the daily supervision of laboratory personnel and work activities.

Essential Functions
Provides daily supervision of technical, clerical, and service employees.
Plans, organizes, assigns, and schedules duties and responsibilities of laboratory staff in coordination with the Laboratory Managers.
Assists technologists in resolving technical issues and interpreting results.
Prioritizes laboratory work to ensure timely completion.
Manages inventory, ordering, and maintaining appropriate levels of laboratory supplies.
Maintains Standard Operating Procedures manuals and ensures compliance with required records and reports.
Ensures staff adherence to all safety policies and procedures.
Oversees staff orientation, training, and competency assessments, ensuring compliance with laboratory procedures, including:
Proper specimen handling, processing, test analyses, reporting, and record maintenance.
Accurate proficiency testing under the same conditions as patient samples.
Adherence to quality control policies, including documentation of activities, instrument calibration, and maintenance.
Implementation of corrective action procedures when test systems fall outside acceptable performance levels.
Identification and resolution of issues affecting test performance, with appropriate escalation as needed.
Documentation of all corrective actions taken when performance deviations occur.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Baccalaureate degree and certification from an accredited cytotechnology program.

  • Certification: ASCP Board of Registry certification is required.

  • Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years in the field, ideally with minimum of 1-2 supervisory experience.

- The knowledge, both practical and theoretical, of tests and procedures necessary to review findings and advise and direct subordinates in action.
- Demonstrates advanced level of analytical skills and judgement.
- Must have relatively high level of analytical ability to work with complex instrumentation, resolve technical equipment problems, relate test results to normal and pathological states, and interpret quality control data.
- Must have understanding of computer technology and its application to analytical procedures and quality control.
- Must have a comprehensive understanding of laboratory equipment and its operation, maintenance and repair and analytic techniques.
- Must have the ability to work independently, evaluate situations and act appropriately.
- Detailed knowledge of applicable federal, state and accreditation requirements.
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
- Advanced computer skills.
- Comprehensive understanding of test principles, equipment operation and computer system operations.
- Make appropriate decisions, develop and complete follow-up actions in conjunction with lab leadership.
- Must be able to perform as a senior team member, providing direction and guidance to less experienced technologists.
- Must have the ability to pay careful attention to detail and to adhere to written protocols, including communication to lab leadership when issues are identified.
- Must be able to perform as a team member.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to interact professionally and effectively with numerous staff including physicians, hospital personnel, employees, and patients.
