Hopkins Athletics is a multidivisional department with 22 programs competing at the NCAA DIII level and two programs (men's and women's lacrosse) competing at the NCAA Division I level (BIG 10 Conference). The department also hosts a variety of robust recreational activities such as club sports, intramurals, and fitness programming.

The Hopkins Athletics department seeks an innovative and forward-thinking Assistant Director, Facilities Operations. The assistant director must operate within the framework of a best-in-class athletics and recreation department at Johns Hopkins University. The Assistant Director, Facilities Operations works to support the mission and integrity of the Johns Hopkins University and the Athletics and Recreation Department. Demonstrating adherence to the department philosophy, facility schedule, equipment and facility maintenance expectations, and communication responsibilities is essential. The strongest candidates will have a demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, team-based environment and a strong history of building and sustaining relationships with staff, students, coaches, and external stakeholders.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage daily facility cleanliness, functionality, set up, and breakdown of athletic and recreation activities to ensure programmatic success.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and functionality of assigned storage athletic and recreation facilities.
  • Manage athletic and recreation facility-related inventory and equipment.
  • Oversight of athletic facility operations employees (6 full-time bargaining units).
  • Manage assigned building and maintenance projects within the athletic and recreation department.
  • Submit service requests for all athletic and recreation facilities' maintenance and repairs.
  • Assist with the management of all indoor and outdoor athletic and recreation facilities to ensure smooth daily operations.
  • Provide varsity game management and coordination for Fall, Winter, and Spring sports throughout the academic year, including staffing, security needs, and facility requirements.
  • Serve as tournament director for regular and post-season varsity events.
  • Act as event manager for any external special or contracted events.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends and be on call for emergencies.
  • Responsible for fostering a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness throughout all levels of the organization, including but not limited to staffing and programming.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Key Relationships

  • The Assistant Director of Facilities Operations is directly supervised by the Assistant Athletic Director, Facilities and Events.
  • This position has significant interactions with faculty and staff, students, alumni, and other outside constituencies.

Physical Effort/Environment

  • General office, athletic and recreation facility, and campus environment.
  • The position will require work indoors as well as outside and in inclement weather.
  • The position will be a full-time, fiscal year appointment, with frequent evening and weekend work required throughout the year, with those dates determined by a supervisor.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • One year of related athletic/recreation facilities experience required.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, as permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Sports Management or related field preferred.
  • Demonstrates leadership traits including effective communication, supervisory skills, and the ability to manage workflow. Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, and oral and written communication skills.

Total Rewards
The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University's salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
