Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday and may be assigned to any Consumers Energy Service Center located throughout Michigan's lower Peninsula. The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).


General Summary of Job Responsibilities

An experienced and dynamic Senior Collection Manager whose pivotal role will be responsible for overseeing the entire collections process, ensuring the timely recovery of outstanding accounts totaling $38M, and managing multiple vendor's strategies, performances and budgets. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in collections management within the utility industry, regulatory compliance with a proven ability to reduce delinquency rates while maintaining positive customer relationships.

The Revenue Operations Department is tasked with the critical responsibility of collecting $7 billion in revenue annually. This is achieved through the comprehensive management of various payment programs and effective arrears management strategies. Additionally, the department plays a pivotal role in advocating for and connecting low to moderate income customers with federal and state energy assistance programs. By ensuring these customers receive the necessary support, the department helps maintain financial stability and access to essential energy services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Forecast for recoveries by establishing analysis on previous and current trends, as well as anticipated changes
  • Execute compliance audits of collection agency vendors to ensure safe, accurate, and excellent operations
  • Develop and implement strategic collection initiatives to improve recovery rates and minimize customer arrears
  • Monitor and manage vendor performance ensuring they meet contractual obligations as well as compliance and regulatory requirements
  • Responsible authority for applicable billing rules and collection laws
  • Collaborate with internal departments such as customer service, billing and finance and IT to resolve customer disputes and system issues
  • Other duties as assigned or may be necessary

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Financial Acumen: Understanding of financial principles, credit, and collections processes
  • Regulations & Compliance: Familiarity with relevant regulations, laws, and compliance requirements, particularly those affecting the utility industry
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with team members, customers, and stakeholders
  • Data Analysis: Proficiency in analyzing data to track performance, identify trends, and make informed decisions
  • Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy and attention to detail in all aspects of the job
  • Customer Service: Knowledge of customer service practices and how they relate to collections
  • Knowledge of billing practices and how they impact collections processes

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, business administration, or related field with four (4) or more years of experiencein collections management, preferably within the utility or similar industry, both commercial and residential collections

    • [OR] Associate's degree infinance, business administration, or related field with six (6) or more years of experiencein collections management, preferably within the utility or similar industry, both commercial and residential collections
    • [OR] High School Diploma/GEDwith eight (8) or more years of experiencein collections management, preferably within the utility or similar industry, both commercial and residential collections
