The Content Research & Development Editor has an educational background in Economics and works within the Discipline Strategy Team to research and analyze instructor and student learning patterns with Macmillan Learning Economics digital products and competing educational platforms. With a focus on customer research and content development, the Content R&D Editor applies subject matter expertise and experience in Economics education to make recommendations for areas for research and development that will help shape content strategy. This includes helping to identify and conceptualize teaching and learning challenges faced by higher education Economics instructors and students and outlining research approaches to test potential solutions.

The Content R&D Editor exercises strong command of all internally and externally approved tools to help create and support the development of innovative educational resources, prototypes of new ideas, wireframes of potential solutions, market surveys, and analyses of the competitive landscape. The Content R&D Editor may also help with the execution of approved programs by managing freelancers and contractors and participating in the project management of the development, completion, and release of specific learning assets for higher education Economics courses, such as assessment strategies, e-books, interactive graphs, podcasts, and instructional videos. The Content R&D Editor is passionate about Economics education and has experience with problem-solving, analyzing data, and developing creative solutions.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:



  • Work within the Discipline Strategy Team to identify, conceptualize, research and analyze potential solutions to "learning problems to solve" that are meaningful to how instructors teach and how students learn within the Economics discipline.
  • Help create and test digital resources, tools, and strategies that aim to solve these identified market challenges.
  • Conduct interviews and competitive analysis to assist in learning the needs of potential customers and to find means to accelerate their use of Macmillan Learning content and pedagogical opportunities within our digital platforms.
  • Work with the Discipline Strategy Team to ensure product market fit and differentiation of our solutions within a competitive marketplace.
  • Collaborate with media editors in the Learning Resource Group to review existing Economics products and ensure they are up to date and continue to meet quality standards; investigate our competitors' media and pedagogical offerings; make suggestions/recommendations based on information gathered; and meet with editorial colleagues to discuss new ventures.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Learning Resource Group and Pedagogical Design Group to ensure that the execution of content update plans will provide the greatest value to instructors and students and differentiate us in the market.
  • Work with cross-functional colleagues on strategies for identified growth courses within the Discipline Strategy team's portfolio. Work with channel marketing on specific messaging, and product marketing on the conceptual value of the overall program. Participate in the strategic approach to adoptions in the sales pipeline.


Required Qualifications:



  • Master's Degree in Economics
  • 2+ years' professional editorial experience in educational publishing.
  • 1+ year professional media editorial or development editorial experience.
  • Experience demonstrating analytical and problem-solving skills to support strategic decision-making, such as analyzing data, market trends, survey results, and qualitative insights.
  • Experience demonstrating high levels of organization, detail-orientation, and self-motivation.
  • Experience successfully communicating complex information verbally and in writing with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently in a fast-paced environment, prioritize effectively, work well in group problem-solving situations, and work within an approved budget.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Curriculum design experience.
  • Certification in product discovery methodology, product marketing, or related programmatic approaches to discovery methodologies.
  • Experience teaching Economics at the higher education level.
  • Passion for continuous learning, innovation, and the utilization of data-driven insights, AI-powered tools, or new digital resources to drive business growth.
  • Creativity, adaptability, and enthusiasm for emerging technologies.
  • Comfortable with trying new ideas and having some of them fail. Willingness to think outside the box.


Salary Range: $65,000 - $75,000 per year.

Physical Requirements:

Requires periods of close concentration and multi-tasking for long periods in noisy/busy environments with frequent interruptions, new assignments, and re-prioritization; must be able to travel occasionally & work overtime - more than 40 hours a week - as needed.

The position is eligible for remote employment, excluding the following locations: Alaska, Arkansas, Hawaii, Mississippi, Nevada, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wyoming. Candidates who are able to work a hybrid schedule out of our Austin, TX office or New York City, NY office are preferred.
