Overview

Serves as point of contact and resource for patients and providers specific to nutritional aspects of cancer care. Provide, assess and document overall nutrition care of patients across the care continuum. Administer counseling and education instruction concerning nutrition/diet to patients where necessary and upon request. Nutrition care includes direct patient care and education from diagnosis through survivorship and palliative care. Assists in the coordination of care for inpatients with a cancer diagnosis as appropriate. Responsible for the growth of the nutritional aspect of the program through evaluation, development, and implementation of additional program components. Responsible for integration of nutritional programming and services throughout the cancer care continuum.


Responsibilities
  • Plans, develops, implements, and evaluates the nutritional component of the comprehensive oncology care plan
  • Administers medical nutrition therapy by nutrition assessment, modified diet formulation, self-management training, and nutrition intervention to patients
  • Assures all nutritional needs are met for the patients and all documentation that relates to each patient is accurate and complete
  • Identifies nutritional risks or problems and establishes nutritional interventions and plans of resolution
  • Conducts group and individual counseling/teaching sessions, relating to the importance of proper nutrition for health promotion and disease prevention
  • Attends and participates in patient treatment team meetings to offer dietary perspectives when appropriate
  • Works in a team environment and communicates effectively verbally and in writing
  • Participates in interdisciplinary case conferences integrating the health care team in meeting the patient's overall plan of care
  • Performs counseling including cognitive behavioral techniques, and includes the patients' input in goal setting
  • Develops evidence-based policies & procedures that reflect state, federal and accrediting organization regulations
  • Remains current with diet/nutrition recommendation literature that pertains to patient population
  • Actively participates in committees and meetings as appropriate
  • Works with organization dietetic staff to maintain required competencies
  • All other duties as assigned.
  • Ensures adequate communication during hand-offs or transfer of care

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Education:

BS in Dietetics, Registered Dietitian

Experience:

Comprehensive knowledge of current clinical and specialized patient care concepts related to own professional area.

Experience working with cancer patients and families, preferred

License(s)/Certification(s):

Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.

Must obtain and hold valid Iowa state license.

Oncology certification or oncology experience preferred

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Ability to work independently and self-direct work activities.

Detail oriented and able to meet established deadlines.

Demonstrates comfort in making presentations to and facilitating small to medium-sized groups (i.e. business, professionals, community agencies, etc.).

Ability to collaborate across departments and with other non-profit organizations.

Other:

Flexibility in schedule and availability for "after hour" events and programs.
