The expected hiring range for this position is: $106,500.00-$151,300.00.

About the Role: The ES&H Division (Environmental, Safety, & Health) is seeking an Electrical Safety Senior Engineer to join a team of electrical and safety experts dedicated to reducing the risk of electrical injuries at Fermilab. This role ensures that construction and operations comply with electrical safety codes and standards while identifying and applying industry best practices. What your day-to-day as an Electrical Safety Senior Engineer at Fermilab will look like:
- Lead or assist with development, review, and/or approval of policies, programs, work plans, procedures, instructions, and other electrical safety documents.
- Review professional service contracts and construction plans and specifications for compliance with building code and standards, sustainability policies, Safety by Design principles, and other DOE orders and standards.
- Inspect electrical construction, modification, and demolition for compliance with building codes and standards and construction contract drawings and specifications.
- Review equipment and systems with electrical components for conformance with Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory listing or field inspection requirements.
- Review equipment and systems with electrical components to which no electrical equipment standards apply to confirm and document that an equivalent level of safety is provided.
- Research and propose solutions to engineering, equipment design and construction, and work execution problems and provide analyses of alternatives to line management.
- Administer programs to manage inspection and testing of electrically protective personal protective equipment in compliance with orders and standards.
- Serve as a resource to line management and staff on electrical safety, hazardous energy control (lockout / tagout), and electrical equipment and infrastructure design, selection, and installation.
- Maintain detailed knowledge of electrical hazard exposures (i.e., shock, arc flash/blast, and thermal hazards), appropriate controls for mitigating those hazards, and implementation of those controls.
- Develop materials for and deliver training related to electrical safety and hazardous energy control (lockout / tagout).
- Review work planning documents for compliance with electrical and hazardous energy control safety principles and perform field audits to verify correct execution of the work plans.
- Participate in reviews and investigations of incidents involving electrical hazards, other types of hazardous energy, and suspect / counterfeit items.
- Contribute to setting lab-wide engineering policies, safety standards or technical standards.
- Serves as the Deputy Chair of the lab's Electrical Safety Subcommittee and as Fermilab's Alternate Representative to the Energy Facility Contractors Group Electrical Safety Community of Practice.
- May serve on other panels, committees, inspections, reviews, and investigations as assigned.
- May participate in technical conferences and publication.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Abide by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.
Skills and Attributes for Success:
- Bachelor's in an applicable Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution with 8+ years of engineering experience, or a Master's or PhD in an applicable Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution with 6+ years of engineering experience.
- International Code Council Standard Master Electrician or equivalent certification preferred.
- Proficient in application of electrical safety requirements established by OSHA standards, including 29 CFR 1910 Subpart S Electrical, 29 CFR 1910.147, the Control of Hazardous Energy, 29 CFR 1910.269 Electric power generation, transmission, and distribution, NFPA 70, National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70B, Standard for Electrical Equipment Maintenance, NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace, NFPA 791, Recommended Practice and Procedures for Unlabeled Electrical Equipment Evaluation, and UL 508A, Standard for Industrial Control Panels.
- Ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, with DOE and FFDG management and staff at all levels.
- Self-motivated, with organizational skills to enable planning, execution, and implementation of objectives in a timely manner.

- Previous experience as Electrical Safety Representative or Staff, Industrial Safety Professional, and/or electrical inspector is a plus.
- Experience in the design, fabrication, assembly, and operation of high energy R&D equipment and systems including energy storage capacitors, high voltage and high current DC power supplies, superconducting magnets, x-ray sources, lasers, and related laboratory analytical equipment is a plus.
- Willingness to contribute to emerging codes, standards, and specifications for the safe design, construction, testing/troubleshooting, and operation of electrical equipment is a plus.
- Experience in safety policies and programs within the DOE complex, such as Integrated Safety Management is a plus.
