APP (NP, PA) Ambulatory Cancer Center - Phase 1 Clinical Trials (MGH Termeer Center)

The Termeer Center for Targeted Therapies NP/PA provides direct care to the clinical trial eligible oncology population in collaboration with the physician and disease center team.
*Utilizes advanced practice knowledge to identify, evaluate and treat hematology/oncology patients participating in complex clinical trial therapies
*In compliance with IRB-approved research protocols provides direct patient care in collaboration with clinical trial staff and physician investigators. Responsibilities will include, but not limited to, obtaining informed consent, ensuring required data collection, adhering to treatment criteria and dose modification guidelines, prescribing or avoiding supportive/prohibitive therapies as appropriate, grading and attributing adverse events and communicating with institutional or sponsor research support staff in the development of a comprehensive plan of care
*Performs specialized procedures as mutually agreed upon by collaborating MDs and per protocol requirements
*Provides first responder coverage for infusion reactions or medical emergencies
*Supports research efforts to advance knowledge and to promote research-based practice in improving patient outcomes
*Evaluates current research findings for clinical specialty and determines applicability to unit practice
*Refers appropriately to MGH Oncology supportive care professionals in order to provide comprehensive care to a diverse patient population
*Serves as a resource to staff and assists in the development of formal and informal educational programs for the unit-based nursing and support staff in area(s) of expertise.
*Collaborates with clinical educators and clinical nurse specialists in identifying and promoting the educational needs of the staff
*Serves on appropriate intra- and interdepartmental committees.
*Responsible for identifying own learning needs and goals to promote professional growth
*Maintains and practices in accordance with practice guidelines per state and hospital regulations.
*Maintains the standards and educational requirements specific to the position and licensure
The hematologic malignancies and solid tumor oncology APP provides comprehensive ambulatory care to one or more disease specific medical oncology patient populations depending on location of care within our academic or network practices. With an interdisciplinary team approach, this provider promotes a collaborative relationship between all providers, professional nurses and administrative staff, to ensure continuity of patient care and efficient use of resources. The APP is responsible for the assessment and management of medical oncology patients, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and development and implementation of appropriate plans of care across the trajectory of illness for patients with hematologic malignancies and/or solid tumor malignancies.
In addition to providing direct and indirect patient care, the medical oncology APP serves as a role model for professional advanced practice and participates in the professional development of the team through teaching, committee involvement or quality and safety initiatives. The medical oncology APP will provide thorough, compassionate, culturally sensitive clinical care and should demonstrate operational flexibility and strong leadership, problem-solving and communication skills in order to work effectively with other members of the team.
The NP/PA is responsible for:
*Utilizing advanced practice knowledge to identify, prevent or solve complex and/or recurring breast oncology patient care problems.
*Following and managing patients (in collaboration with MD) enhancing continuity of care.
*Performing (oversees/assures completion of) specialized procedures particular to the select medical oncology population mutually agreed upon with collaborating physician.
*Collaborating with staff and physicians to facilitate a comprehensive plan of care and coordinate resources and write appropriate orders improving access to care, establishing goals for the delivery of care to patients, participating in clinical research, and managing communications between physicians, patients, family, and staff.
*Appreciating complex medication interactions.
*Ensuring appropriate diagnostic procedures occur in a timely matter through careful coordination with other services such as radiology, facilitating various clinic appointments, communicating with patients regarding test results, and providing coverage for the team.
*Educating patients regarding a variety of medical oncology issues associated with local or systemic therapy.
*Understanding the complex medical environments of cancer patients including, but not limited to, those with advanced malignancy or organ dysfunction.
*Writing orders which are in accord with current guidelines including antineoplastics.
*Maintaining and practicing in accord with practice guidelines per state and hospital regulations.
*Serving on appropriate intra- and inter-departmental committees
Collaborates with staff and other health care professionals to meet staff and patient educational needs.
*Participating in the development of formal and informal educational programs for nursing and support staff.
Monitors patient outcomes in accordance with defined standards of patient care.
*Identifying system-wide factors contributing to undesirable outcomes, such as complications and over utilization of services.
Supports and conducts research efforts to advance knowledge and to promote research-based practice.
*Evaluating own practice and program effectiveness.
*Identifying pertinent patient care and health delivery problems for investigation.
*Evaluating current research findings for clinical specialty and determines applicability to practice.
*Identifying own learning needs and goals. Responsible for own professional growth and maintenance of required credentials. Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current health care practice/research.
*Maintains the standards and educational requirements specific to the position and licensure.
*Taking responsibility for leadership and participation on committees and task forces within patient care services and the hospital.
*Is willing to obtain procedural proficiency for medical oncology specific procedures. Training will be provided.

Experience
