The newly formed Office of Student Involvement and Traditions is seeking a Graduate Assistant to join our team. The office promotes an involved and active campus by supporting involvement seekers, overseeing the operations and education of over 350 student organizations at Carnegie Mellon University, and supporting and coordinating the unique traditions that make this university feel like home to our 16,000 students. Supervised by the Coordinator of Student Involvement and Traditions, this position will get direct experience in student supervision, content facilitation, event planning (including budgeting and contract negotiations), and student organization support and advising.

Core responsibilities include:

Student Organization Support

  • Supervise the TartanConnect Rep, the student directly supporting the CMU involvement tool, TartanConnect (powered by Campus Groups), including oversight of the programmatic and marketing budget

  • Develop and execute content in partnership with the TartanConnect Rep that can support the use of TartanConnect widely with involvement seekers and student organization leaders.

  • Review data submitted via the End of Year Student Organization Report to make suggestions for, as well as facilitate, educational and social opportunities aligned with student leader needs.

  • Support the onboarding of new organizations recognized by the Committee on Student Organizations (CoSO) through 1 on 1 advising.

  • Provide ad-hoc advising support to our event management outreach initiative to provide proactive support to student organizations throughout their event planning process.

Campus Events & Traditions

  • Partner across the department to assist staff with the planning, developing, budgeting, and execution of hallmark programs such as THE FAIR, Scotty Saturday, Winter Welcome, and Senior Week.

  • Coordinate at least one stand-alone event during Winter Welcome and Senior Week.

  • Support the partnership with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Pittsburgh Penguins by promoting and executing CMU-specific nights for the CMU community.

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Strong oral and written communication skills are required in addition to analytical skills.

  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in a graduate program in higher education administration, educational leadership, student affairs, or related field.

The department is committed to a robust assistantship experience designed to best prepare you to apply your coursework and thrive in the field of student affairs. New opportunities and increasing levels of responsibility may be explored throughout the assistantship in order to support the growth of the individual assistant.

The Graduate assistant position is an approximately 20-hour per week hourly position which will sometimes include evening and weekend hours. You will be provided with a laptop, workspace, and all necessary work materials for the duration of your assistantship. Anticipated assistantship period for the first semester is August 25, 2025 through December 12, 2025 . For the second semester the anticipated assistantship period is January 5, 2026 through May 8, 2026. This position has the option for a second-year appointment concluding a successful first year.
