Overview
This role works collaboratively with Underwriting, Actuarial, Product Development, Legal, Claims, and Quality Assurance to ensure continued growth and profitabilty. Uses strong underwriting acumen to develop recommendations for improvements across multiple lines of business in the E&S space. The role is also responsible to research industry data to determine opportunities for new product and coverage offerings. All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Assists in the Research and presentation of recommendations for New Products or Coverages. Partners with the Product Development Specialists to support their responsibility for New Products and Updates to existing products by analyzing forms, rates and market conditions.
- Ensures a consistent business process and compliance to underwriting guidelines. Makes recommendations for changes to guidelines as appropriate. Collaborates with the Product Development Specialist regarding decisions, requirements and ramifications to MUSIC proprietary forms.
- Understanding of the profit & loss for the lines of business as well as classes of business. Participates in analysis to aid Managers on what is needed to improve the profitability and production by providing recommendations and support to drive the activity required.
- Supports Profitable Growth initiatives by analyzing marketplace products, coverages and pricing and shares the data with key stakeholders accordingly.
- Supports analysis and governance of Property Aggregates and Guidelines for continued and improved Profitability. Supports Class and Line of Business Profitability Analysis and Guidelines for continued and improved Profitability.
- Receives, researches and addresses underwriting, form or process questions from Brokerage, Binding, corporate underwriting, utilizing underwriting expertise to suggest the most appropriate solution or course of action in a timely manner.
- Actively participates in supporting predictive model efforts as well as reporting and hazard monitoring.
- Works with their Manager, MUSIC University, Binding, and Brokerage to create and provide educational materials and training programs for agents and UW personnel to ensure thorough understanding of underwriting guidelines, issues and controls.
- Partners with Claims and Legal to address possible verbiage changes to our forms, changes in UW Guidelines and recognize emerging issues in order to assure continued profitability.
- Attends Industry events such as State Surplus Lines Meetings, in order to anticipate the product development and pricing needs of the book - in order to maintain profitability. Active in recognition of Emerging issues and the impact on our book.
Qualifications
Knowledge and Requirements
- Strong technical underwriting knowledge required.
- Strong working knowledge of ISO.
- Ability to research and analyze coverage.
- Good communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to manage a project.
- Pro-active; driven; takes initiative.
Education and Experience
- College degree preferred.
- 10+ years Commercial Underwriting experience.
- The following experience is preferred:
- 3+ years specific line of business experience;
- 3+ years Risk Management and/or reinsurance experience
- 3+ years Field Underwriting; and/or 3+ years agency experience.

The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.
Pay Range
USD $92,000.00 - USD $127,000.00 /Yr.
