Your Role

About the Job

We are seeking a dynamic and results-driven Manufacturing Systems Engineer focused on digitalization and automation to spearhead the advancement of our production systems. In this role, you will provide expert technical guidance and support to operations and manufacturing engineering, focusing on the maintenance and continuous improvement of both current and future processes. This position requires a versatile individual capable of tackling immediate troubleshooting challenges while also contributing to long-term strategic goals in digitalization and automation. You will collaborate closely with various internal departments at our New Hudson facility and partner with our U.K. process engineering team to maintain consistency and best practices across the organization. You will report to the Manufacturing Engineering Manager.

Essential Duties



  • Lead and champion Industry 4.0, digitalization, and smart factory initiatives across the facility, driving innovation and operational excellence.
  • Design, configure, and commission industrial automation systems, including IoT integration.
  • Develop and implement automation solutions to optimize manufacturing processes, enhance efficiency, and reduce downtime.
  • Engineer data connectivity solutions, including application or raw code development, to integrate automated equipment with databases for real-time data acquisition and analysis.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex equipment and network downtime issues, ensuring minimal disruption to production.
  • Establish and maintain robust data collection and reporting systems to facilitate data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain Altas Copco Group operational technology (OT) cybersecurity strategies to safeguard industrial control systems and data integrity.
  • Serve as the site's OT Champion, ensuring adherence to best practices and standards for operational technology.
  • Manage and maintain the Manufacturing Execution System (MES), optimizing its functionality for production control and data management.
  • Foster strong collaboration and communication between Manufacturing Engineering and IT departments to ensure seamless integration of systems and processes.
  • Provide technical leadership and support for the design, installation, and commissioning of new manufacturing equipment.
  • Communicate project status, deliverables, and technical requirements effectively to project teams and stakeholders.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive technical documentation for process improvements, standard operating procedures, and system changes.
  • Stay abreast of emerging Industry 4.0 technologies and best practices and recommend innovative solutions to enhance manufacturing capabilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall objectives of the organization.

Preferred Skills and Knowledge



  • Strong problem-solving, communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to operate effectively and efficiently individually and as part of a team.
  • Ability to adapt and adjust priorities as necessary to support operations.
  • Ability to share knowledge and teach proper methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of standard communication protocols (Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profibus, etc.).
  • Understanding of network and server maintenance preferred.
  • SQL and SQL database experience required.
  • Experience with PLC programming preferred.
  • Experience with ERP systems a plus.
  • Basic programming, Windows Domain Infrastructure, and MS Power Platform experience preferred.
  • Ability to travel locally as needed.



Education and Qualifications



  • B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent degree preferred. Equivalent industry experience of 10+ years may be considered.
  • 5 - 10 years hands-on experience in IT/OT/Industry4.0/Engineering, in a manufacturing environment, required.
  • Must be able to legally work in the U.S. Visa sponsorship is not available at this time.



Physical Requirements (As Applicable)



  • Ability to safely move about a large production facility as needed, on a regular basis.
  • Able to lift 20+ lbs.
