The salary range for this position is $108,700 - $210,800. See Professor and Professor of Teaching Series - Academic Year Regular Scales. "Off-scale salaries" and other components of pay, i.e., a salary that is higher than the published system-wide salary at the designated rank and step, are offered when necessary to meet competitive conditions.

Position description

The Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (https://mbb.bio.uci.edu/) in the Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences at the University of California, Irvine (https://www.bio.uci.edu/) is inviting applications for a tenured Senior Professorship in Virology with a focus on host-virus innate or adaptive immune responses, viral pathogenesis, structural virology, emerging and re-emerging viral pathogens, viral replication mechanisms, or development of anti-viral therapies and vaccines. Applicants should hold a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree.

The successful candidate should have an internationally recognized research program with a sustained record of research funding from extramural agencies, experience with teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels and a demonstrated commitment to service and leadership. You will be expected to teach across all programs (undergraduate, Masters and doctoral). Opportunities may be available for leadership roles. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of a curriculum vitae, a 4-page statement of research interests and future research plans and a 1-page statement of teaching and mentoring experience. Research plans identifying synergistic connections with existing UCI research programs are encouraged. The UCI Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences offers a dynamic and collegial environment which values collaborative activities. The successful candidate will join the Center for Virus Research (https://www.cvr.bio.uci.edu/) whose members include a growing and collaborative group of faculty affiliated with various schools at UC Irvine and studying diverse areas of virology. UC Irvine has two BSL2-plus laboratories and two state-of-the-art BSL3/ABSL3 facilities available for the research programs of trained faculty.

These accomplishments and ambitions should be discussed in the context of describing your teaching, scholarship, and service.

Research Statement (4 pages). This statement should:



  1. Detail your specific area of expertise and contributions to the field.
  2. Devote two pages to your funded research program and the significance and impact of the work.
  3. Another two pages should describe your plan for your future research projects and how your research program will synergize with the research environment at UCI (see https://www.bio.uci.edu/centers-institutes/).


Teaching Statement (1 page). This statement should:



  1. Describe your areas of teaching interest and teaching experiences to date, including experience with teaching/lecturing to undergraduates/graduate students or other populations. This should include experience mentoring others in research or through outreach activities.
  2. Clarify your favored teaching approaches and philosophies and describe how you will engage in teaching strategies that are effective in diverse populations. If possible, provide evidence of effectiveness of previous teaching.
