The Chief Physician Executive (CPE) is a senior executive leader responsible for shaping the clinical strategy and overall clinical operational excellence of Cone Health. The CPE leads operations across the clinically integrated continuum of care of Cone Health including Cone Health Medical Group and Cone Health medical staff. As a key member of the executive leadership team, the CPE oversees clinical operations and collaborates with leaders across the organization to drive high standards of care, operational efficiency, and financial sustainability. This role plays a pivotal part in advancing the organization's mission, aligning clinical initiatives with strategic goals, and fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration. At the Executive Vice President level, the CPE reports directly to the CEO, ensuring integration of clinical excellence into system-wide strategies. This position provides strategic oversight of clinical quality, patient safety, and organizational performance, direct oversight of the employed medical group while strengthening relationships with medical staff more broadly, enhancing care delivery models, and leading efforts to improve clinical outcomes across all care settings. The CPE plays a critical role in guiding the organization through transitions to value-based care and payment models. Will collaborate with the EVP, Value Based Care to drive the adoption of standardized care models, optimizing population health strategies, and expanding the organization's capacity to manage attributed lives effectively through data-driven, team-based care to be successful in value-based care. |

Strategic Leadership -Provide executive-level leadership in defining and implementing clinical and operational strategies aligned with the organization's mission, vision, and long-term goals. -Serve as a key advisor to leadership contributing a clinical perspective to the overall strategic direction of the health system. Clinical and Operational Integration -Oversee the integration of clinical services across the health system, ensuring seamless coordination between hospitals, ambulatory care, and post-acute settings. -Foster alignment between clinical priorities and operational objectives to achieve system-wide efficiency and excellence. Quality and Patient Safety -Support enterprise initiatives to improve clinical quality, patient outcomes, and safety standards, ensuring adherence to evidence-based practices and develops a culture of high reliability. -Monitor performance metrics and implement corrective actions to address gaps in quality and safety. Physician and Provider Engagement -Foster strong relationships with medical staff, promoting a culture of collaboration, transparency, and mutual accountability. -Drive the recruitment, retention, and development of physicians and advanced practice providers to build a high-performing clinical workforce. Data and Analytics Oversight -Leverages data analytics to drive clinical and operational decision-making, identify trends, and forecast future needs. Financial Stewardship -Collaborate with the CFO and other executives to ensure clinical operations meet financial targets while maintaining high standards of care. -Develop and oversee budgets for clinical departments, aligning resource allocation with organizational priorities. Regulatory Compliance and Risk Management -Ensure compliance with all applicable healthcare regulations and accreditation standards. -Proactively identify and mitigate risks related to clinical operations, patient care, and organizational reputation. Cultural Leadership and Change Management -Promote a culture of innovation, equity, and inclusion, fostering engagement and alignment across the health system. -Lead change management initiatives to address evolving healthcare landscapes, ensuring the organization remains adaptive and resilient. |
EDUCATION: |
Required: MD, DO, or equivalent medical degree, with board certification in a relevant specialty. |
EXPERIENCE: |
Required: At least 10 years of clinical experience, with significant leadership experience in a healthcare setting, such as a hospital, healthcare system, or large medical group. Prior experience of at least 3-5 years at the Systemwide CMO and /or SVP/Regional President level or above. Preferred: Experience in Medical Group Leadership, Provider Compensation, and Value-Based Care (Familiarity with alternative payment models, including value-based care, bundled payments, and population health management). |
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY/LISTING: |
Required: Licensed to practice as MD or DO in the state of North Carolina Board certification in a relevant specialty. |
