Position Overview The Designer I role supports the production of structure designs in a growing Transportation practice area for private sector, local municipalities and DOT projects. The Designer I is vital to ensuring designs and studies are thorough, accurate, and meet the project's objectives. Success in this role is defined by developing and displaying proficiency in both in-office and field competency targets. Key Responsibilities
- Learn and apply McAdams structure design standards to ensure consistency and quality in plan production
- Apply knowledge of basic transportation design and analysis concepts
- Learn apply knowledge of NCDOT Structure Design Manual, AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications, and material specific design guidelines (timber, steel, concrete, etc.)
- Navigate NCDOT and local governments' approval processes for design plans
- Gather and record information to be used in design and to write specifications
- Perform calculations in support of broader design activities
- Assist with preparation of plans, specifications, and bid packages and ensure that specification, reports, and analyses meet scope, schedule, cost and quality requirements
- Act as a liaison by effectively communicating and coordinating tasks with various internal project teams to foster integrated project delivery
- Work collaboratively with the project team, following company standards from initial concept design through construction administration to achieve successful project outcomes
- Perform site visits as part of project team to take field measurements, make condition observations, neatly document these observations, and perform technical writing to summarize those observations.
- Display a keen interest in designing structures for a variety of users including pedestrians, cyclists, and transit
- Actively participate in team discussions, share insights, and contribute to a collaborative work environment that enhances the overall McAdams experience and promotes professional growth across departments
- Coordinate with other McAdams service lines to develop appropriate design plans and bid sets as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
Skills + Experience
- Four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited program in Civil Engineering/Transportation, or related field required
- North Carolina EI or progressing towards and EI
- Ability to obtain North Carolina PE required
- 0-4 years of experience in structures design
- Experience with performing structures design efforts for a variety of public clients is preferred
- Consistent focus on clarity, accuracy, and completeness of work product
- Strong critical thinking abilities and communication skills
- Excellent task and time management skills
- Enjoys working within a high performing team
- Knowledge of NCDOT and local government standards and procedures is preferred
- Valid driver's license
