Job Description

The University of Missouri School of Law Library seeks a Student Services and Reference Specialist who will provide excellent student services to the Law School community. The position will be a member of the Law Library's Patron Services and the Reference teams. In this role, the person we hire will engage students in many capacities, including by presenting legal research topics to law students in a variety of formats. The work schedule for this position is 8am - 5pm, Monday - Friday, but the final schedule is negotiable.

We seek a personable, creative, and energetic candidate who will inspire and guide students in utilizing innovative library resources for their academic and work endeavors. The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about legal research and resources, passionate about supporting legal education, and an excellent communicator.

We hope to encourage the person in this position to become a professional law librarian and will provide tuition and fee support to the person in this position to obtain a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from the University of Missouri.

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching legal research tools and techniques would be a key skill in this role. That could include a variety of teaching experiences including:
    • Teach lunchtime instructional workshops on legal research topics
    • Engage with law students in the student lounge area and provide short informational sessions on legal research topics
    • When invited by faculty, guest lecture in skills-based or doctrinal courses on a variety of research-related topics
  • Under the tutelage of the Law Library director, teach specialized legal research courses
    • Develop outreach materials such as email newsletters, displays, exhibits, brochures, and other marketing materials
    • Coordinate effective and strategic marketing of library services, resources, and spaces, particularly by updating the Law Library website
    • Contribute Law Library social media content for the Law School communication outlets
    • Provide reference service via email or by walk-in patrons as back-up to the Reference Librarian
    • Support Patron Services operations including the library systems and personnel supporting circulation and resource sharing services
    • Work with the Law Library Director in the development and implementation of access services policies and procedures

Shift

8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday with flexibility as approved by supervisor

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school. Previous relevant experience in a law library. Demonstrated interest in law librarianship through a combination of education and relevant experience. Tech-savvy with library systems and with legal education and law practice technologies. Candidates who wish to pursue the MLIS degree will be strongly preferred but it is not a requirement of the position.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $22.91 - $29.10 per hour, depending on the qualifications of the candidate
