Job Summary

This position is responsible for the organization and preparation of complex lab equipment and materials for laboratory experiments primarily in the instructional areas of general biology, anatomy and physiology, and some microbiology. This position assists in providing student instruction and mentoring as well as providing direct assistance to students doing their internship, research and work study. Communicates effectively with instructors, vendors, coworkers, other campus departments and the general public.

Essential Functions

65% - Prepare, organize, and set up complex lab equipment, supplies, solutions, for student lab exercises; replenish, clean, and store lab materials; interact with faculty, staff, and vendors to optimize lab operations

15% - Purchase and receive lab materials and equipment; maintain records of equipment and supplies; assemble, maintain and troubleshoot complex laboratory equipment. Maintain and update financial records.

15% - Provide work direction, schedule, train, advise, and mentor student workers in the usage and cleaning of laboratory equipment and spaces and in the preparation of lab materials such as solutions and media

5% - Determine and implement safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials; maintain Safety Data Sheets

Minimum Qualifications

Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution and two years of experience such as providing assistance to students in an instructional setting; and/or preparing, maintaining and delivering equipment, supplies or other related instructional materials used for laboratory activities in area of assignment.

An equivalent combination of the conferred degree and directly related full-time work experience as described above sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation, may be considered.

Desired Qualifications

A. Biology degree or other college degree with at least 4 credit hours each of biology and chemistry (please provide unofficial transcripts which documents degree or course completion as attachment to application)

B. Experience working in laboratory setting

C. Proficiency in MS Word and MS Excel

D. Experience with biology labs including their preparation

E. Knowledge and practice of safe handling and storage of hazardous chemicals, safety equipment, and safety regulations

F. Experience following detailed procedures, using precise methodology

G. Experience in directing the work of others and/or monitoring entry level workers

Special Working Conditions
  • Work schedule: Full time. M-F 8-5pm. Some flexibility in schedule. Summer M-Th 10 hour days.
  • May be exposed to chemicals, fumes, bacteria, fungi and particulates which may present health hazards if not handled properly
  • May require frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions
  • May require lifting objects up to 25 lbs
  • May be required to work in an area of light to heavy noise levels daily
  • Travel to campus during interview/selection process will be at candidate's own expense
