Overview
Rutgers Alternate Route Program is an approved CE-Provider Program which helps non-traditional teachers earn their NJ Teaching Certification while working with sponsoring school districts. The program was specifically designed for aspiring teachers who have not completed a formal teacher preparation program at an accredited college or university.

The program entered this partnership in 2003 with the NJ Department of Education's Provisional Teacher Program to provide this service. Rutgers Alternate Route program attracts a variety of provisional teachers (teaching candidates), some of whom are career changers seeking greater job satisfaction and others who are recent college graduates seeking to make a difference through teaching. In order to accommodate the diverse needs of the teaching candidates, we offer 400 hours of formal instruction to Alternate Route teaching candidates seeking standard certificates for general elementary and various subject areas. Training sessions are coordinated in seven counties to offer statewide access.
