ECU Department of Facility Services: Sustainability Program is currently seeking applicants for a Sustainability Program Intern. This is a
year long internship position.
During
Summer 2025, this intern will assist with the following:
1. Setting up and running a table for Summer Orientation Involvement Fairs, which take place twice per week throughout the summer.
2. Assisting with hosting the 2025 Southeast Sustainability Network (
SESN) Summer Summit.
3. Helping the Sustainability Outreach Specialist host monthly Lunch and Learn events to promote the new and improved Version 3.0 of the Green Office Program. This program has been upgraded and moved mostly online for individuals or departments to work their way through the four levels: Seed, Sprout, Sapling, and Tree. The intern will help give presentations to interested staff and faculty, conduct waste audits of the departments/offices, assist the groups or individuals to work through the certification process, award certificates, and promote the program to the University Committee through a variety of methods online.
During
Fall 2025 Semester, this intern will assist with the following:
1. Continuing to promote the Green Office Program and helping offices and individuals get certified.
2. Help setup and run tables for these fall events: Get A Clue Involvement Fair (September), Homecoming Involvement Fair (October), Campus Sustainability Day (October), Polar Plunge Involvement Fair (November), Monthly Sustainability Film Screenings
3. Weekly tabling for the
ECU Energy Challenge in October, in which residence halls compete with one another to reduce energy consumption in their dorms.
4. Another big project that will require significant data collection and analysis is the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (
STARS). This report is submitted every three years and
ECU is due to renew the University's
STARS rating in February 2026. There are several credits that may require assistance, but the two most time-consuming that will be the responsibility of this student intern are the Sustainability Course Inventory and the Sustainability Research Inventory. For the first credit, the student will be responsible for evaluating sustainability-related and sustainability-focused classes in the course catalog. For the second credit, the student will be responsible for reaching out to academic departments and requesting descriptions of research being conducted by
ECU faculty that is related to sustainability.
5. In addition, the student intern may be asked to help with designing a new door display for the Sustainability Program, creating display materials for a case near our offices, setup for other campus sustainability events, writing articles for the monthly newsletter, and other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
During
Spring 2026 Semester, this intern will assist with the following:
1. Continuing to promote the Green Office Program and helping offices and individuals get certified.
2. Help setup and run tables for these fall events: Pirates Aboard (March), Pirate Nation Gives (March), Argh You Ok Day (March), Library Spring Fling (April), Employee Appreciation Week (April), and Barefoot on the Mall (April)
3. Weekly tabling activities and events for Campus Race to Zero Waste (February/March) and Earth Month (April)
4. In addition, the student intern may be asked to help with designing a new door display for the Sustainability Program, creating display materials for a case near our offices, setup for other campus sustainability events, writing articles for the monthly newsletter, and other duties and responsibilities as assigned. |
