Job Description

University Health is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Litigation Counsel to join our in-house legal team in a dynamic and hands-on role. Working closely with the Chief Litigation Counsel, this attorney will directly manage all phases of litigation for matters involving professional and general liability. From pre-litigation strategy through trial, the Litigation Counsel will play a key role in protecting University Health, University Health Physicians (UHP), and their employees.

This is a unique opportunity for a seasoned litigator to step into an in-house role that provides the opportunity to try cases and make a direct impact on organizational safety and legal outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Litigation & Legal Defense
    • Serve as co-counsel in all claims and lawsuits involving University Health, University Health Physicians (UHP), and their employees.
    • Handle all aspects of litigation including: preparation of all pleadings and written discovery; selection and production of experts for deposition; deposition of plaintiffs; preparation of healthcare providers for deposition; settlement negotiations; and active participation in all trials, including service as second chair to the Chief Litigation Counsel.
  • Legal Counsel & Risk Mitigation
    • Provide legal guidance to avoid or resolve professional and general liability issues.
    • Counsel physicians and staff to prevent litigation and improve patient safety.
    • Review and help create medical/legal policies and procedures.
  • Emergency Legal Support
    • Be on-call or available to respond to urgent healthcare-related legal and ethical questions.
  • Team Leadership
    • Supervise legal assistants or litigation paralegals.
    • Work with the Office of General Counsel on matters related to litigation and patient safety.
  • Budget & Trust Management
    • Assist in managing Self-Insurance Trust expenses and resources.
    • Support budget oversight and effective settlements to protect Trust assets.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in Missouri and admitted to Federal Court (additional KS licensure preferred).
