Description

JOB SUMMARY: Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS) will perform lab functions related to testing of patient specimens in order to facilitate direct patient care.

PRIMARY DUTIES:



  • Have one year of experience and be competent in performing a variety of routine tests and laboratory procedures in a Clinical laboratory for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease which include, but are not limited to:

    • Urinalysis
    • Clinical chemistry
    • Hematology
    • Microbiology
    • Blood Bank


  • Prepare chemical reagent stains and solutions for automated equipment
  • Prepare specimens to be sent out to the reference laboratory
  • Meet CIH Laboratory competencies in each section of the laboratory to include; Urinalysis Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Phlebotomy and Blood Bank
  • Troubleshoot unusual or unexpected patient results, repeating patient testing as required
  • Follow procedure for reporting critical results
  • Prepare tissue samples for study by another staff member
  • Make preliminary identification of bacterial cultures subject to review by a section lead.
  • Maintain laboratory stock, keep each section clean and organized in all areas of the lab.
  • Collect specimens from patients and shall be able to draw blood on all age groups (Phlebotomy)
  • Answer the telephone, record and relay messages and/or redirect calls as necessary.

    • Refer urgent messages as necessary for immediate action


  • Be required to utilize the computer and programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and RPMS
  • Perform maintenance & trouble shooting on automated equipment and maintain accurate and orderly documentation log records, worksheets and other laboratory records where required Perform quality control and critical assessment of quality control results on all instruments in the laboratory; initiate investigative action when quality control is unacceptable and corrects observed variances
  • Meet all mandatory IHS education/training deadlines
  • Knowledge of communication skills and proficiency in the English language in order to allow for tactful and diplomatic relations with all levels of staff, patients and their families
  • Possess a thorough understanding of laboratory compliance as it relates to CAP, CLIA & The Joint Commission and any other regulating agency that might be applicable
  • Possess good oral and written communication skills as well as organizational management skills
  • Have experience with standard office administrative functions with verbal and writing skills
  • Will frequently walk, reach, kneel, stoop, stand
  • Lift up to 25 pounds
