ARES is seeking a summer Multimedia Intern to provide graphics and photography support to the NASA Enterprise Multimedia and Integrated Technical Services (eMITS) contract. eMITS is the Agency's enterprise- level contract creating and delivering multimedia and technical communications through the use of the internet, digital platforms, and IT management for NASA's Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) and Office of Communications (OCOMM). From photographing rocket launches and recoveries, to producing engaging videos, to information technology management, to using social media to share NASA's message, eMITS integrates services for NASA IT and provides NASA's communication to the outside world. Responsibilities include:

ARES is hiring interns to support outreach requirements for NASA mission and institutional objectives. This internship will provide opportunities to support a broad range of multimedia activities, including graphics and photography. The intern will work directly with NASA Scientists to create web content (both animated/video and still) and educational material (posters, bookmarks, brochures, etc.). This work is for the GSFC Graphics and Print group at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt MD.

  • An internship opportunity exists at Goddard Space Flight Center.
  • Graphics Focus: Assist in creating designs (social media, print materials, basic branding), prepare files for production, learn, and utilize relevant software (Adobe Suite, etc.). May be involved in layout, typography, and basic concept development under supervision.
  • Photography Focus: Support photo shoots (setup, lighting, assisting photographer), perform image editing and retouching, organize and manage digital photo libraries. May have opportunities for independent shoots or assisting with various photographic tasks.
  • Hybrid Roles: Combine graphic design and photography skills to create integrated visual content for different platforms.
  • General: Adhere to brand guidelines, manage time effectively to meet deadlines, communicate progress and challenges, actively seek, and incorporate feedback, and collaborate with team members on projects.
  • Onsite positions the intern employee bears travel costs to nearest NASA Center for badging and issue of NA

Education and Relevant Work Experience:

  • Currently pursuing a BFA degree in information technology, business, communications, graphic arts, or a related field.

Experience:

Software Proficiency:

  • Graphic Design: Strong working knowledge of industry-standard design software is crucial. This typically includes the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), and sometimes other tools like Sketch, Figma, or Canva.
  • Photography: Familiarity with photo editing software is essential, primarily Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. Knowledge of other editing tools may be a plus.
  • Both: Basic understanding of digital file formats, image resolution, and color management. Photography Fundamentals (for Photography-focused roles or combined roles):
  • Understanding of camera operation, lenses, exposure (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), composition, and lighting techniques (natural and artificial).
  • Design Principles (for Graphics-focused roles or combined roles):
  • Solid understanding of design principles such as typography, layout, color theory, visual hierarchy, and branding.
  • Basic Technical Aptitude: Comfort working with computers, file management, and potentially basic troubleshooting of equipment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to visually communicate complex science concepts to a general audience using graphics, photo images, and video

Minimum Requirements:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, OneNote, One Drive), SharePoint, and Box
