SUMMARY: Develop, manage and maintain a comprehensive security program to ensure the protection, security, and safety of the building, collection, staff, and visitors. Demonstrate a proactive approach to risk management, actively assessing relevant threats, and develop appropriate safety and security protocols and programs. Assist leadership with emergency preparedness and disaster recovery procedures and ensure that all security and life safety systems are up to the highest industry standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:




  • Establish and enforce protocols for all public events and daily operations, including Standard Operating Procedures for handling disruptive guests and safeguarding of the collection.


  • Plan, direct, and manage the staff and operations of the Security and Gallery departments to ensure 24/7 coverage for security needs and coverage for events.


  • Directly supervise and develop the Security and Gallery managers; ensuring, through training and guidance, their compliance with policies and procedures, and the readiness of the security/gallery staff to effectively cope with security- and visitor-related issues.


  • Perform or assign regular and random off-hour visits to ensure strict compliance with security and gallery policies during weekends and evening events.


  • Ensure ongoing training, development, and coaching for security officers and gallery attendants to achieve fair and consistent treatment and opportunities; provide excellent security to staff, visitors, and the collection; and provide world-class service to visitors.


  • Implement or recommend corrective or disciplinary action of staff according to Museum and department procedures.


  • Assist managers to develop and manage to departmental budgets; approve requisitions and invoices.


  • Control security systems at all times, through changing exhibitions, to maintain the highest levels of protection for the staff, visitors and the collection. Develop appropriate guard post areas specific to the requirements of gallery layouts, exhibitions, functions, and special events,


  • Oversee and provide recommendations regarding planning and deployment of deterrent technology, coordinate purchase of necessary equipment, maintenance and issuance of equipment.


  • Maintain the emergency procedures handbook and the emergency management plan for the Museum. Ensure all Museum staff receive appropriate training upon hire and regularly thereafter.


  • Collaborate with other Museum departments to stay abreast of activities that have an impact on security, to advise on maintaining security, and to support Museum-wide initiatives through providing security. This will include participation in cross-functional teams.


  • Collaborate with outside agencies, including Forest Park, other ZMD entities, and local law enforcement to understand external security issues and prepare for internal response.


  • Make recommendations to the Deputy Director and Controller, as well as other Museum leadership, regarding critical safety issues, including closures or lockdowns for security purposes, immediate removal of persons or property, or similar critical precautions/responses. May be required to act independently in crisis situations.


  • Plan, coordinate, and evaluate special events security, including budget development and control.


  • Conduct regular assessments and ensure security systems are updated and functioning efficiently.


  • Maintain current knowledge of security-related state and federal laws, fire protection and other pertinent safety laws and codes; security systems and technical equipment; security issues in the museum field, particularly the art museum field.


  • Continue safety training and seek higher levels of certifications as appropriate.


  • Ensure incident reports are prepared, tracked, and filed properly. Institute enhanced policies and procedures to remediate issues.
