HDR has an immediate opening for a Hydropower Mechanical Engineering Team Lead to join our Northern California team and be a part of our vibrant and growing national hydropower practice that ENR ranks Number 2 in the Top 10 firms providing services to owners and operators of hydropower plants. HDR operates offices throughout California and our NorCal hydropower practice serves as a vital hub linking hydropower expertise and capabilities among our Power and Water hydropower clients in NorCal, as well as leading and providing support for hydropower projects throughout California, the southwestern U.S. and nationwide. Primary responsibilities for this position include leading the hydropower mechanical engineering practice in Northern California, overseeing the management of NorCal's hydropower mechanical engineering projects and team, and engaging in business development and client engagement activities. This role involves a combination of leadership, business development, people management, and technical duties, all aimed at supporting and driving the success of the NorCal hydropower mechanical engineering team while ensuring that client needs are met and exceeded. In the role of Hydropower Mechanical Engineering Team Lead, we'll count on you to:
- Take charge of the mechanical section's operations: Hire and develop staff, provide mentorship, drive business performance, maintain quality control, and support marketing efforts to attract top talent
- Lead projects as a Project Manager and/or Technical Lead: Oversee production and management, review equipment and design specifications, evaluate bids, perform site inspections, develop mechanical designs, and provide field support during installation, testing, and start-up.
- Take administrative responsibility for section staff and technical service functions: Lead and coordinate services with other power and hydropower sections across NorCal and the broader HDR.
- Be directly involved with hydropower clients: Engage in marketing, project production, and related issues, including business development, preparing proposals, and interviews.
- Ensure all work is planned, organized, controlled, evaluated, and executed: Utilize proactive project management and quality control.
- Select, train, develop, and manage technical personnel: Build a strong, skilled, diverse team.
- Manage and develop multidiscipline teams: Foster collaboration and innovation.
- Work cooperatively with the National Hydropower Practice and overall Power Sector: Support local and national marketing and production efforts.
- Perform other duties as needed: Supports project goals and HDR business activities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior consulting experience: Includes client relationship building and client manager responsibilities.
- Industry expertise: Minimum 7 years in the power industry.
- Power station systems experience: Cooling water, lube oil, governor hydraulics, compressed air, HVAC is a plus.
- Active engagement in industry associations: Participation in ASME, NHA, CEATI, ACEC, etc.
- Technical proficiency: Experience with large valves, turbines, piping systems, rotating equipment, heavy machinery, and engineering design.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
