Summary:
Under general guidance of the Clinical Nutrition Director is responsible for organizing directing and evaluating the delivery of quality pediatric nutritional care associated with Hasbro*s Children*s Hospital the pediatric division of Rhode Island Hospital and Emma Pendleton Bradley Hospital for both inpatient outpatient and group home services. Serves on Clinical Nutrition-Patient Care management team assisting in planning and setting goals for the division. Directs and evaluates staff of Dietitians Dietetic Technicians and clerical staff in providing nutritional care. Ensures the smooth and effective interface of other service areas of responsibility within Food and Nutrition Services (F&NS) and other service areas within the hospital including but not limited to Nursing Pharmacy and the Medical Staff. Regularly performs the duties of a Pediatric Clinical Dietitian as required. Provides leadership for the business management of outpatient nutrition services such as triaging to correct nutrition clinic marketing registration charge entry productivity tracking to optimize patient care and revenue stream. Ensures regulatory requirements are met. Provides leadership in Epic builds upgrades maintenance templates reporting and staff training related to Clinical Nutrition.

Responsibilities:

Assumes responsibility for planning providing directing and evaluating nutritional care to the pediatric population and coordinates assigned responsibilities with other Hasbro Children*s Hospital and Emma Pendleton Bradley Hospital areas in order to ensure the delivery of a comprehensive nutrition care program.

Ensures the smooth interface of nutritional services with other patient care activities. Meets with other members of the health care team and families in order to resolve problems and to identify areas of service improvement.

Develops and administers staffing schedules coordinates schedules with other operational areas in F&NS -Patient Care and other Senior Dietitians. Ensures that areas of responsibility are staffed according to level of service provided and patient populations served.

Collaborates with the Clinical Nutrition Director in developing goals and objectives for areas of responsibility and participates in the development of policies and procedures governing nutrition care services for both pediatric inpatient outpatient and group home services ensuring regulatory compliance.

Provides leadership for triaging of pediatric outpatient nutrition services clarifying when referred to the incorrect clinic and facilitate referral to the correct clinic. Maximizes clinic productivity and efficiency for optimal revenue generation.

Participates in determining the qualifications and competence of department personnel and in the development of tools and standards to establish and improve competency levels of the staff including orientation of new employees in-service training and continuing education programs.

Interviews trains assigns work evaluates and when necessary initiates discipline and termination. Provides guidance and counsel to resolve complex and/or sensitive problems.

Effectively and continually communicates with staff management and customers to facilitate the flow of operations. Provides timely and accurate communication both written and verbal as appropriate regarding operational changes and continuous quality improvement activities including goals and objectives of F&NS.

Provides leadership in Epic builds upgrades maintenance templates reporting and staff training related to Clinical Nutrition.

Coordinates the planning organization and supervision of educational projects and programs to achieve departmental objectives and serve the hospital community.

Plans patient satisfaction initiatives and department programs in customer service for meeting the department and hospital mission vision and goals.

Remains current on developments in the area of pediatric nutritional care by participating in continuing education and professional development programs attending workshops reading articles and journals and by membership in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Pediatric Nutrition Practice Group (PNPG) and other practice groups as warranted.

Participates in department quality improvement programs and department financial and productivity measures as requested.

May be requested to participate in community and media programs.

Serves as a member of the Clinical Nutrition*Patient Care management team within F&NS and participates in division and department goal achievement. In consultation with the Clinical Nutrition Director represents F&NS at pediatric leadership and interdisciplinary meetings.

May regularly perform all the duties of a Pediatric Clinical Dietitian.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

A Bachelor*s Degree in Food and Nutrition or a related concentration from a US Accredited College/University approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).

Completed ACEND accredited supervised practice program and successfully passed national examination for Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDN) by the Commission of Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

License as a Dietitian/Nutritionist in the state of Rhode Island (must have within 3 months of hire). Proof of application for license to be submitted upon employment.

Thorough understanding of the application of principles of nutrition to human physiology and pediatric disease states. Thorough knowledge of the nutrition care process and the nutritional values of food and food groups.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to pediatric patients with consideration of human developmental skills family dynamics and cultural patterns in each step of the care process. Analytical ability to identify overt and potential nutritional problems.

The ability to develop nutritional care programs.

Information technology competency to provide department leadership in electronic health record builds and upgrades.

Analytical ability to identify overt and potential nutritional problems.

Ability to communicate nutrition education through formal and informal channels.

Analytical and numerical skills to assess and calculate diets and evaluate the work of others.

Administrative ability to direct and coordinate the delivery of quality nutrition care in the area of Pediatrics within the goals of the department.

Management ability to direct and coordinate food service system delivery and operation to patients and nursing unit areas.

Maintain Registered Dietitian (RD) status through the Commission of the Dietetic Registration (CDR) through the completion of 75 hours of continuing education every five years. Fifteen of these hours should be spent in a pediatric specialty area and/or management development.

Membership preferred in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and relevant practice groups such as the Pediatric Nutrition Practice Group (PNPG). Attainment preferred of specialty certifications such as Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC) by the American Society of Parental and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) and/or Board Certification as a Specialist in Pediatric Nutrition by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).

Master*s Degree in nutrition or related area preferred.

Maintain Dietitian/Nutritionist license in the State of Rhode Island including 20 continuing education credits each RI license period.

Ability to resolve patient food service satisfaction issues through a thorough knowledge of patient service operation.

Proficient computer skills in MS Word MS PowerPoint and MS Excel.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of seven to ten years of progressively more responsible experience as a Pediatric Clinical Dietitian in a supervisory role.

Managerial experience in a large teaching hospital desirable.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Sits stands and walks intermittently throughout the day. Exposed to a pediatric patient care environment when visiting with patients and their families and when meeting with other health care personnel. May be required to lift up to 10 pounds. Hazards are minimized with adherence to established safety precautions. Travel is required to off-site facilities.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Performs independently within the department*s policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to the Clinical Nutrition Director when clarification of departmental policies and procedures are required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Functional supervisory responsibility for up to 20 FTEs.
