Summary:
Reports to the Clinical Director of the Nurse Practitioner Service. Under the general supervision of the Lead Nurse Practitioner II and the Attending Physician of Record the nurse practitioner is responsible for the development and evaluation of treatment plans for inpatients. The Nurse Practitioner assists in the care and management of cardiac patients to include but not limited to: admission history and physical ongoing assessment and intervention and coordination of care for the cardiac inpatient population. All essential functions performed in this position reflect the age specific needs of the patient.

Responsibilities:
Obtains medical histories and performs and records physical examinations. Records pertinent progress notes in the medical records and develops treatment plans. In addition the Nurse Practitioner will initiate life-saving measures in emergency situations.

Initiates patient*s status and collaborates in the development of a plan of care with the patient and family registered nurses and the attending physician. Provide educational and liaison supports to health care team members.

Participates in the education of patients families and caregivers regarding any procedures post-procedural care and expected outcomes and progress.

Interprets electrocardiograms and rhythm strips. Initiates Basic Life Support/Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

May perform other duties as requested by the attending physician within the Nurse Practitioner scope of practice. The Nurse Practitioner acts as a liaison between the attending physician or his/her delegate and the Nurse Practitioner Service.

Assists in clinical research projects including data acquisition entry and analysis as needed.

Participates in quality improvement teams and other committees as needed.

Maintains quality assurance safety environmental and infection control in accordance with established hospital department policies procedures and objectives.

Other information:

Licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Graduate from an accredited Nurse practitioner program with MS degree. Certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) to practice in the expanded role. License must include prescriptive privileges. Certification by the American Heart Association in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is required.

EXPERIENCE:

Clinical experience as a nurse practitioner for 2 years is preferred or a supervised clinical internship in cardiology. Must have patient care services procedures and privileges approved by the sponsoring physician.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Healthcare environment is the hospital. Physical hazards of the position are minimized by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions.

None.
