The department of Campus Recreation at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for a (Hybrid) Coordinator for Fitness and Wellbeing.

About the Opportunity

The Program Coordinator for Fitness and Wellbeing works with the Campus Recreation Associate Director to fulfill the mission, values and goals of the Campus Recreation program, in support of the Division of Student Life and West Virginia University. This individual has direct policy making responsibility at the department level that includes fitness and wellbeing services such as group exercise, personal training, specialty fitness and other fitness services, primarily conducted at the Student Recreation Center (SRC) and Downtown Fitness Center (DFC). The coordinator creates policy and systems in areas including administrative, financial and personnel functions in conjunction with other members of the Programming and Operations teams. Reporting to the Associate Director of Campus Recreation, this position is responsible for formulating policies, making purchasing decisions, monitoring daily operations, and planning the optimal use of various personnel to deliver a comprehensive and engaging user experience.

Directly supervises Graduate Assistant staff, student staff, personal trainers, and group exercise instructors. This person will be responsible for growing activity offerings in line with university needs and industry trends. Coordinates yearly review of Fitness program policies and procedures; provides input to other team members in regard to programmatic or operational activities that positively or negatively impact user satisfaction. Performs strategic visioning for the program area as well as the student development initiatives.

What you'll do:



  • Provide administrative oversight of the operational, financial, and personnel functions for all fitness and wellbeing programs offered through Campus Recreation with an emphasis on creating, implementing and providing consistency in policies, procedures and end-user experiences.
  • Provide day to day leadership of fitness and wellbeing services including group exercise, personal training, specialty fitness and other fitness services.
  • Performs administrative duties related to planning, directing, and coordinating both the academic and operational activities of the fitness and wellbeing program area.
  • Develop, promote, execute, and evaluate a comprehensive group exercise program including recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating instructors.
  • Develop, promote, execute, and evaluate a comprehensive personal training program including recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating trainers.
  • Serve as a Personal Trainer and/or teach Group Exercise Classes as needed.
  • Develop, organize, and promote new and on-going group exercise special event programs and services.
  • In coordination with Office of Student Wellness units and other university entities; develop, organize and promote new and on-going special events programs and services.
  • Instruct group exercise instructor and personal training courses.
  • Collaborate with Program Coordinator for Informal Recreation and Associate Director regarding policies and procedures impacting all fitness related areas and recommend improvements to policies and guidelines as needed.
  • Support and oversight of the fitness areas to ensure we are delivering a quality product.
  • Assist in researching fitness programming needs of students, faculty and staff; including long-range strategic planning pertaining to fitness and provides recommendations.
  • Assist in purchasing of fitness equipment for fitness programs and fitness areas.
  • Provide assistance for campus-wide initiatives and support campus partners as a resource for: wellness fairs, speaking engagements for halls/departments and service on various committees.
  • Recruit, hire, on-board, train, supervise, mentor and facilitate professional development for Graduate Assistants for Fitness and Wellbeing.
  • Ensure revenue targets are meeting benchmarks set in collaboration with Leadership Team.
  • Facilitate regularly scheduled instructor and personal training meetings.
  • Coordinate with non-student wellbeing programs in the area to offer services to their intact groups.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Required: Minimum of two (2) years of experience working in a collegiate recreation environment or similar. Graduate Assistant position may meet this requirement.
  • Preferred: A minimum of three (3) years full time experience working in a college or university recreation environment with particular emphasis on a student development driven program, during which time the applicant has acquired and demonstrated the ability to perform the essential duties of the position.
  • Passionate about student development and the mentoring of staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students, student organizations, faculty/student committees, different government agencies, and community groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead diverse groups of individuals employing flexibility in management techniques, appropriate to a variety of situations.
  • Possess skills and willingness to create and deliver programs to a wide range of individuals and groups, primarily consisting of college students but also ranging from youth though senior citizens.
  • Possess and apply an entrepreneurial approach to planning and problem solving.
  • Knowledge and ability to effectively handle public elations.
  • Strong time management and supervisory skills.
  • Ability to creatively plan and budget programs.

Requirements

Licenses / Certifications:



  • Personal Training experience and related national certification or Group Exercise Instructor experience and related national certification required (ACE, ACSM, or AFFA Certification).

    • Preference may be given to individuals holding both Personal Training and Group Exercise Instruction national certifications.


  • CPR/AED, First Aid certification
  • CPR/AED, First Aide, Instructor training (preferred) - must obtain within 6 months of hire.
