Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced, hands-on technical senior manager to fill the position of Associate Director, Web Technology Solutions. Reporting to the Director of Enterprise Digital and Web Solutions, the Associate Director will play a crucial role in evolving and operationalizing our web technology portfolio, contributing to our AI-first digital strategy, and leading a team to implement leading edge digital transformation and AI initiatives. This role aims to enhance both customer and team member experiences while supporting our organization's mission and future-focused business strategy. The Associate Director will help devise technical solutions that provide digital equity across the enterprise and are scalable to support UCSF's growth, and will be responsible for planning the scope and execution of approved strategic solutions.

To achieve UCSF's strategic goals, the Associate Director will establish objectives and work plans, and delegate assignments to subordinate managers. The role is responsible for manging, preparing, administering, and directing resources to complete work to scope, on time, and on budget. The role may be involved in developing, modifying, and executing policies that affect team operations(s) and may also have a broader impact across the enterprise. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve defined goals results in additional costs and personnel, and serious delays in overall schedules.

Examples of responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage and continue to develop a team that includes, web and software development, web architecture, UX/UI, product management, content strategy.
  • Contribute to the people and budget planning process, carefully manage work to align with the available resources, and provide relevant reports.
  • Lead the implementation of prioritized technologies under the purview of the Web Technology Solutions group.
  • Provide expertise in evaluating web content management systems.
  • Provide expertise and technical leadership in implementing selected AI solutions.
  • Oversee the development and maintenance of web platforms, templates, portals, and associated websites, and support internal customers responsible for managing sites on UCSF-hosted platforms (e.g.,Drupal).
  • Make informed recommendations based on prior professional experience, industry best practices, and analysis of UCSF data to contribute to the evolution of a standardized, enterprise-focused portfolio of web offerings.
  • Ensure that Web Technology Solutions complies with all relevant laws, regulations, and cybersecurity standards.
  • Represent the Enterprise Digital and Web Solutions team on critical initiatives, such as digital accessibility compliance.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $208,400 - $303,800 (Annual Rate).

UCSF is technologically and organizationally complex, with both centralized and departmental IT units providing support for enterprise and specialized services. UCSF IT provides education, research, and health technology services, along with shared infrastructure, security, analytics, application, and customer support services, and is essential to the organization's ability to support growth, mitigate security risk, and manage, store and share sensitive information.

This position is a leader in the Enterprise Digital and Web Solutions (EDAWS) group within the Enterprise Systems unit, and manages the Web Technology Solutions team which includes:

  • Software and Mobile Development
  • Website/portal development (development, technical product management, content strategy)
  • UX/UI design and front-end development
We partner with other IT shared services teams (Research IT, Education IT, Health IT) to achieve UCSF's goals.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • At least five years of experience managing an information technology organization
  • 10+ years of proven experience in a leadership role (senior manager, associate director or equivalent) in digital solutions, with a track record of successful digital transformation project implementations
  • Deep experience with planning and budgeting at a leadership level and managing budgets carefully and accurately
  • Experience in the management of ongoing technology infrastructure acquisition and expansion, including the identification and integration of suitable emerging technologies
  • Experience in analyzing buy vs. build procurement for products for effective and efficient technology use
  • Direct experience with enterprise content management systems including Drupal
  • Direct experience with Cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
  • Direct experience with Agile and Scrum development methodologies
  • Understanding of relevant government laws and policies around data collection, analytics, and digital accessibility, including HIPAA, FERPA, and ADA rules
  • Experience in applying AI/LLM/ML to digital solutions and understanding of latest digital front door technologies and search capabilities
  • Experience showcasing digital transformation knowledge by driving transformative change through digital technologies
  • Hands on proficiency with digital tools, platforms, web development technologies, and modern web frameworks
  • Experience in participating in change management activities and managing their impact across multiple organizations across division, college or institutional boundaries
  • Extensive experience in technical strategic planning and creating detailed roadmaps aligned with IT's broader objectives
  • Demonstrated proficiency managing web development, digital design, and data analysis
  • Extensive and in-depth knowledge of Information Technology principles, theories, and concepts to manage functional area(s) and provide solutions
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of service delivery principles (such as ITIL based service management)
  • Skilled at translating high-level business goals into actionable, prioritized implementation plans for web and software development teams, ensuring the delivery of forward-looking, strategic, and sustainable solutions consistent with industry trends
  • Demonstrated success in developing and executing digital strategies
  • Thorough knowledge of supervisory and leadership techniques in managing technical staff
  • Requires the ability to change the thinking of, or gain acceptance from, others involving project work and initiatives
  • Solid knowledge of policies and procedures and ability to determine a course of action based on these guidelines
  • Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities in the digital realm
  • Strong ethical standards and commitment to cybersecurity and data privacy
  • Proven experience leading technical teams in growth environments with multiple stakeholder groups
  • Thorough knowledge of technical concepts and basic operating principles of data communications, computer hardware, vendor IT products, and software
  • Critical thinking, persuasion / negotiation, conflict resolution, mentoring and staff development, leadership / management, problem solving, human resources policies and procedures relating to management responsibilities
  • Ensure alignment between development and operational goals
  • Capable of gathering, organizing and analyzing data to enable the completion of diverse functional assignments
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively present technical topics to large groups and senior management with potentially varied levels of technical sophistication

  • Certifications in relevant technologies, architectures, or programming languages
  • AI/LLM/ML certification or course, demonstrated expertise in artificial intelligence technologies
  • AWS certification or course, or demonstrated expertise in cloud-based development solutions
