Assistant/Associate General Counsel
Position Description Performs legal work involving research and case briefing in assigned areas in the Office of General Counsel.

About the Department and/or College Our office serves as legal counsel for the Texas Tech University System, a $2.2 billion annual enterprise with over 20,000 employees and 53,000 students across its five component institutions: Texas Tech University, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso, Angelo State University, and Midwestern State University. We advise the Board of Regents, System administration, and university administration, faculty, and staff, acting in their official capacities on all legal matters. Our office works directly with the Office of the Attorney General of Texas on litigation and manages outside counsel on certain specialized legal matters.
Major/Essential Functions The primary duties for this position will be as follows.
- Handle Texas Public Information Act (TPIA) requests which involves managing and coordinating responses to public information requests, ensuring compliance with the TPIA and other relevant laws, and overseeing the process of gathering, reviewing, and disclosing public records. Assess requests to determine which requires an Attorney General opinion.
This position will also perform the following duties.
- Work with the Office of the Attorney General of Texas in defending lawsuits filed against the TTU System or its component institutions including, but not limited to, responding to discovery requests, preparing for and attending depositions and hearings, and filing motions.
- Respond to complaints of discrimination by former or current students or employees that are filed with external agencies (e.g., EEOC, TWC-CRD, OCR, DOL) including, but not limited to, attending mediations, filing position statements, and participating in interviews.
- Draft, review, and advise regarding contracts of the Texas Tech University System and components.
- Provide legal advice on a variety of issues including, but not limited to, matters concerning the rights, obligations, and privileges of institutions of higher education, and federal and state regulatory matters.
- Advise officials, faculty or staff of Texas Tech University System and components.
- Review and interpret laws, regulations, proposed legislative bills, and internal policies affecting operations and administration.
- Handle medical malpractice and professional liability matters.
- Review/revise campus-wide policies and procedures.
- Work with the Vice Chancellor and General Counsel on issues impacting the board of regents.
- Attend and advise various TTU System component committees.
- Engage in actions and communications that are consistent with the Texas Tech University System and component institution Values Culture.
Required Qualifications Assistant General Counsel: JD degree; Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas.
Associate General Counsel: JD degree; five years experience as an attorney. Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas.
Preferred Qualifications Assistant General Counsel: Three years experience as a practicing attorney handling legal maters that are relevant to representing a public institution of higher education. Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas.
Associate General Counsel: Seven years experience as a practicing attorney handling legal matters that are relevant to representing a public institution of higher education. Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas.

Minimum Hire Rate Asst: $100-$105K; Assoc: $120-$125K
