THE POSITION

The Department of Labor and Industry, Scranton Referee Office, is seeking a highly motivated, organized professional capable of functioning in a fast-paced, challenging legal environment. In this role, you will have the opportunity to support the Referee staff in processing Unemployment Compensation (UC) appeals filed from determinations issued by UC Service Centers (UCSC). DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Legal Assistant 2, you will provide administrative and legal support to the assigned Appeals Referee and Referee office. A key responsibility will be managing the Referee's hearing schedule. This includes preparing hearing notices, scheduling or rescheduling hearings, and handling receipt of documents after the hearing is scheduled to determine if the records are received in a timely manner for distribution to the other parties. Work involves proofreading and verifying Referee decisions from digital recording or typed drafts. This position requires you to proficiently navigate computer applications and systems to maintain electronic and paper files. Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing is essential as you will be expected to greet customers and handle telephone calls, emails and in person visitors seeking information.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours (may be negotiable) are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: This position also currently provides the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, for eligible employees. You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time after successful completion of training. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the Scranton office.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year as a Legal Assistant 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Four years of responsible clerical, investigative or enforcement work including one year of legal clerical support experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.
