GENERAL SUMMARY: Oversees the Laboratory Specialists in the areas of Chemistry, Hematology (including Coagulation and Urinalysis), Microbiology and Transfusion Medicine. Ensures compliance with all regulatory and safety requirements to ensure the highest quality of service to patients and physicians at all times. Researches, evaluates, recommends and implements technical supplies, instrumentation, equipment, methodologies and procedures for the Clinical Laboratory. PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values. 2. *Supervises, trains and evaluates the performance of Laboratory Specialists. 3. *Assesses, comprehends and manages the development, implementation and management of the quality monitors for the Clinical Laboratory's Quality Management System Plan. 4. *Establishes and maintains data collection, monitoring and analysis of technical laboratory processes and incorporates the results of Quality Assessments to improve patient care and services. 5. *Facilitates compliance with all CAP, AABB, Joint Commission, safety and other regulatory agency requirements; maintains knowledge of regulations and acts as a resource for technical staff, administrative staff and physicians. 6. Oversees the development and maintenance of the technical policies and procedures. 7. Collaborates with the Laboratory Technical Staff Manager in the development of technical staff by participating in their competency and proficiency assessment to insure regulatory and safety requirements are met. 8. *Collaborates with laboratory leaders and personnel to resolve technical issues. 9. *Prepares capital requests for budgetary process; establishes means to monitor and control costs in relationship to volumes and requirements. 10. *Collaborates with laboratory management, Medical Center and Health System personnel by utilizing effective communication skills and problem solving techniques; applies continuous quality improvement concepts and methods to effect appropriate change to meet quality improvement and productivity benchmarks. 11. *Researches, evaluates, recommends and implements the inventory of laboratory equipment, instruments and supplies including the management of preventative maintenance and repairs. 12. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise. 13. Participates in and/or leads meetings, committees, strategic planning and lean projects as assigned. 14. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned. Attach Addendum for positions with slightly different roles or work-specific differences as needed. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Knowledge of clinical laboratory test protocols, equipment and processes. 2. Knowledge of current Federal, State and local protocols, local laws and compliance standards pertaining to laboratory functions and operations. 3. Knowledge of Quality Management techniques or processes. 4. Knowledge of budget and financial management methods and practices. 5. Knowledge of computer hardware equipment and software applications relevant to work functions. 6. Ability to develop written policies and procedures, memoranda and performance evaluations with measurable behaviors. 7. Ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams and work as a team member. 8. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. 9. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes. 10. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff. 11. Ability to problem solve and engage independent critical thinking skills. 12. Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information. 13. Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision. 14. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelors of Science degree in Medical Technology or equivalent field of study required. American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification required. Minimum three (3) years of clinical laboratory experience required. Minimum of one (1) year supervisory or managerial experience in a clinical setting required. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: (Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.)
