Role Summary

As a General Assembly Equipment and Automation engineer you will play a key role by enabling the product design team and process team by introducing innovative equipment and automation designs, leading manufacturing equipment deployment projects from conceptual equipment definition to commissioning and ramp up.


Responsibilities

  • Develop high level targets and forecasts for equipment projects, including JPH, availability, MTTF, MTBF, ergonomics, timing, cost, and safety.
  • Develop assembly strategy and business cases for automated assembly processes in accordance with product dimensional analysis and manufacturing equipment benchmarking.
  • Work hand in hand with Rivian's product design teams to ensure that design for assembly and design for automation targets are established and met within new product designs.
  • Lead project management activities required to design, procure, and install equipment, including development of Request for Quotation (RFQ) and Scope of Work (SOW) documents, work bidding, financial approval, vendor management, management of budget, schedule, and risk, stakeholder management, and management of vendor contractual obligations.
  • Act as owners representative in engineering activities involved with creating custom equipment for new Rivan manufacturing lines, including conceptual layout development, automation strategy development, design coordination, material specification and selection, and ensuring vendor designs are in accordance with relevant standards and best practices.
  • Coordinate with cross functional teams to understand requirements and constraints for equipment, including permitting and compliance, material flow, operational requirements, maintenance schedules, and controls strategy. Navigate challenging requirement sets to achieve optimized result.
  • Travel to vendor sites, both domestic and international, for equipment design, qualification, acceptance testing and support during FAT/SAT events.
  • Ensure successful equipment deployment and ramp through creation of detailed manufacturing instructions, spare parts lists, operating procedures, maintenance procedures and other key documents.
  • Develop equipment qualification including correlation, process capability (CP/CPK) and Gage Repeatability / Reproducibility (GR&R).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or similar technical field.
  • 3+ years' experience deploying equipment in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience in managing medium and large equipment projects, both in brown field and green field environments.
  • Knowledge/experience in layout development, concept equipment design development, and new product development.
  • Experience in equipment design best practices.
  • Experience in designing and specifying conveyors, assembly automation, and process equipment, as well as in equipment building blocks such as pneumatic components, motors and and gearing, electrical components, etc.
  • Knowledge of GD&T principles, as well as other manufacturing and industrial engineering metrics such as MTTF, MTBF and GR&R.
  • Experience writing technical documentation and contracts.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems and see the solution implemented to a high level of accuracy & quality.
  • Ability to work independently to execute a project plan based on defined goals and targets.
  • Capable of working as a member of a team across several cross functional disciplines, including with external stakeholders.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working in both 2D & 3D CAD (AutoCAD & Catia are also a plus)
  • Open to travel within US and abroad intermittently up to 50%
  • Willing to think outside the box and willing to challenge the status quo.

Pay Disclosure

Salary Range/Hourly Rate for Illinois & Georgia based applicants: $98,000-$123,000 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).

Salary Range/Hourly Rate for California based applicants: $107,000 - 134,000 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).

Benefits Summary: Rivian provides robust medical/Rx, dental and vision insurance packages for full-time employees, their spouse or domestic partner, and children up to age 26. Coverage is effective on the first day of employment, and Rivian covers most of the premium
