Reuters is seeking aUS Space & Defense Correspondent (Level 1 Journalist)with exceptional writing and reporting skills. This is an exciting opportunity to join a small team of reporters covering the rapidly evolving space and defense industries, a beat at the intersection of technology, geopolitics and national security.

We're looking for someone who can craft compelling and original stories on the expanding space industry, including Elon Musk's SpaceX and Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin, as well as the raft of technology firms that are disrupting traditional defense incumbents and pushing the boundaries in areas like drones, artificial intelligence and advanced weaponry.

The ideal candidate will be a versatile writer and reporter, equally comfortable covering breaking news events, working with other reporters to elevate initiative stories, and independently reporting on their own projects. Experience covering the space or defense sectors would be an advantage. The role is to be based in Washington, DC but applicants based in New York City will be considered.

About the Role

As US Space & Defense Correspondent, you will:

  • Write sharp and engaging copy on both breaking news and enterprise stories
  • Source, research and execute airtight reporting on investigative stories
  • Prioritize coverage according to developments and coordinate with the global editor
  • Write engaging pitches and ensure they meet the expectations of editors
  • Collaborate with colleagues to expand the scope and depth of reporting from each
  • Work with visuals colleagues to maximize the use of graphics, pictures and video

About You

You're a fit for the role of US Space & Defense Correspondent if your background includes:

  • At least 5 years experience as a business journalist
  • Track record of producing impactful and ambitious stories
  • Experience covering space or defense sectors
  • Exceptional writing and reporting skills
  • A team player with a global mindset
  • Ability to work independently and in small groups as projects dictate

Thomson Reuters complies with local laws that require upfront disclosure of the expected pay range for a position. The base compensation range varies across locations.
Eligible office location(s) for this role include one or more of the following: New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and/or Irvine, CA; McLean, VA; Washington, DC. The base compensation range for the role in any of those locations is $72,000 - $130,000.
