What Is Medical Specialty?
Medical Specialties is one of the fastest growing service lines at University Hospital, recently expanding from 28 to 55 beds. The unit sees patients who are ill and require acute care, serving a diverse population. The most frequent diagnosis types include pulmonary compromise, sepsis, GI disorders, diabetes, cellulitis, infectious diseases, mental status changes and substance withdrawal.

The unit is a great place to learn about a broad variety of patient types and diagnoses to further your nursing career. Daily safety and communication huddles ensure timely communication of expectations and patient needs, giving team members a cohesive and positive learning environment while providing excellent care.

DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION

Assist nursing staff /ancillary staff in transferring patients from bed to bed,

stretcher or wheelchair, pickup, and delivery of patient meal trays, and

assisting with patient feeding as directed.

Demonstrate the ability to organize workload and manage multiple tasks while maintaining a clutter-free and orderly environment including prompt answering of unit telephones and accurate delivery of messages and information to patients, families, visitors, staff, and personnel upon request.

Educate and train new staff members in the responsibilities of the Care Team Associate role.

Perform other duties as delegated by nursing staff and unit management as needed in both routine and emergent situations.

Perform patient position changes, placement and removal of patient equipment, daily hygiene care, simple non-sterile dressing changes, finger stick glucose checks, may perform venipuncture to obtain a blood sample, maintain quality control checks, and deliver/retrieve lab specimens and supplies as requested.

Responsible for accurate and timely entry of information into the bed-management system.

Responsible for prompt response to patient call lights and addressing patient needs using positive guest relations skills while ensuring patient vital signs, intake, output, height, and weight are obtained and documented as directed.

May complete unit/department specific duties as outlined in department documents.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

One of the following:

--Completion of a Fundamentals of Nursing course within 180 days; or

--Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) exam registration; or

--Direct patient care experience in the past three (3) years as a medical assistant, nursing assistant, emergency medical technician, or surgical technician; or

--Completion within the last three (3) years, or will complete within 180 days, an Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) training program and clinical log; or

--Nursing licensure candidate who was unsuccessful on the state licensure examinations in the past three (3) years; or

--Completion a nursing program outside the United States and is awaiting the licensure examination in this country.

Completion of an above qualifications pathway, including 100 hours of patient care experience or a supervised clinical log, within 180 days as a condition of continued employment in this job classification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met with or without reasonable accommodation. The performance of these physical demands is an essential function of the job. This position is very active and requires ambulating, reaching, and moving objects weighing up to and over 20 lbs.

This role also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. This position is in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
