The Emergency Communications division of the Department of Emergency Services is looking for qualified applicants for the Part-time Emergency Communications Radio Dispatcher position.

The Emergency Communications Radio Dispatcher will dispatch medical and fire emergency calls over the radio, track emergency vehicle and responder locations, utilize multiple software and technology programs simultaneously, and accurately document incident and call information.

Hours and schedule for this position include weekends, holidays, and shift work, utilizing open shift scheduling. With this system, available shifts will be posted a month in advance, and the part-time employee can sign up based on their availability.



Job Description

    Alternates between regional and state radio systems to dispatch incidents in counties other than Johnson County; maintains working knowledge of the MARRS console; understands and utilizes radio console functions such as alert tones, channel patching, and multi-selecting; ensures working knowledge of 10 different department radio assignments, locations of approximately 50 stations, apparatus and capabilities; performs responder safety checks; and complies with Radio Performance Standards and JCFESCA Model Procedures.
  • Answers requests and completes connections; uses knowledge of call information, and policy and procedure proactively to activate trauma plan which includes timely notification of proper trauma center and additional resources; responds based on stated injuries, location, traffic concerns, time of day, and other pertinent information; determines and provides early weather warning information through radios and pagers with accompanying alert information; provides command and control of responders until arrival on event scenes.
  • Tracks unit location and availability continuously; facilitates disbursement of county emergency resources; anticipates additional resource needs by staging uncommitted units for depleted area coverage and/or response to working incidents; provides accurate documentation of call activity; utilizes and tracks current street closings hydrants unavailable, hospital patient acceptance capabilities, equipment resource lists, premise information files, and other pertinent information; observes and tests online and backup equipment and systems continuously associated with radio communication.
  • Articulates, promotes and supports the mission, vision, and values of the department and Johnson County; reviews and trains to maintain current levels of operations knowledge, stays abreast of continuous system changes, enhances knowledge, and learns new skills; provides input to enhance and improve department services to our customers and the public.


Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of emergency fire and medical radio dispatching experience
  • The ability to pass both an auditory (Audiogram) and vision test (Ishihara Color Vision and Vision Titmus near.far.color.perip) with or without reasonable accommodation and pass a drug screen prior to employment.

Johnson County Government requires reference/background screening for all positions. Specified criteria may vary by Department/Agency.
