Requisition ID req33428 Working Title HS Associate Scientist 3 Position Grade 14 Position Summary The UNMCCC Flow Cytometry Shared Resource is seeking a Health Sciences Associate Scientist 3. This position will be responsible for all aspects of the flow cytometry core facility daily operations including independently operating a Beckman Coulter CytoFlex SRT cell sorter; training facility users to operate facility instruments appropriately including a Cytek Aurora, BD Accuri C6, Thermo Fisher Attune NxT bench top flow cytometer, a BennuBio Velocyt large particle analyzer, a Magpix Luminex analyzer and Biotek monochrometer- based plate reader. Additionally, this position will assist in experimental design/protocol development, data acquisition and data analysis with various software packages. This position will also be responsible for troubleshooting and maintaining all instruments, billing/invoicing through Aglient iLab software, requesting and maintaining appropriate lab consumables and reagents in the core and organizing and participating in workshops and tours of the facility for new/potential users. Additional responsibilities include fostering relationships with clients, helping maintain safe practices within the facility, assessing new and alternative cytometry techniques and ensuring data are sufficiently backed up. This position will also assist and provide input to the faculty director and Associate Director for Shared Resources during mid-year budget and business plan preparation. This position will work directly with the faculty director of the Flow Cytometry Shared Resource to ensure proper functionality of this shared resource and provide optimal service to its users across the HSC campus. Term appointment; funding available for one year; continuance beyond that date subject to availability of additional funding. * Must possess a mechanical aptitude for operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment * Must be able to provide technical leadership for day to day operations of the core including operation, maintenance, basic repairs. * Must be able to provide administrative leadership for the core regarding scheduling of usage, confirmation of usage and billing * Possess basic understanding of cell biology * Experience in flow cytometry, specifically in cell sorting * Ability to interact successfully with a range of individuals within and outside the university * Be able to provide professional leadership, training, assistance and oversight for users of the facility * Enthusiasm for working with and supporting facility users * Basic computing skills are required * Familiarity with Mac and PC preferred * Ability to work independently, meet responsibilities without continuous supervision * Good verbal skills * Strong attention to detail * Willingness to work flexible/staggered shifts preferred The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its more than 136 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 600 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provide treatment to 65% of New Mexico's cancer patients from all across the state and partner with community health systems statewide to provide cancer care closer to home. They treated almost 15,000 patients in more than 100,000 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. A total of nearly 1,855 patients participated in cancer clinical trials testing new cancer treatments that include tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The more than 123 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded $38.2 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects. Since 2015, they have published nearly 1000 manuscripts, and promoting economic development, they filed 136 new patents and launched 10 new biotechnology start-up companies. Finally, the physicians, scientists and staff have provided education and training experiences to more than 500 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery. Minimum Qualifications Master's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
