Duties, Responsibilities & Other

KCI's cost estimating and scheduling practice is a unique service within KCI which develops detailed "production-based" construction cost estimates and schedules for a variety of clients. These clients include owners, contractors and design firms throughout North America. We specialize in contractor-style cost estimates utilizing HCSS HeavyBid. Depending on the project, our estimating process requires various tasks such as performing detailed quantity takeoffs, constructability analysis, Critical Path Method (CPM) schedules utilizing Primavera P6 software, risk analysis, etc. to develop a cost estimate. The strength of our team comes from our collective years of experience in the construction industry.

As a Chief Estimator for KCI, your role is to oversee a team of estimators in the development of construction cost estimates for complex heavy civil construction projects and ensuring their accuracy. This role requires a deep understanding of the cost estimating process, HCSS HeavyBid software, estimating libraries, and heavy civil construction. This position will require close collaboration and coordination with the lead estimators, project managers, the practice leader, clients and/or estimating teams from other firms.

Key Responsibilities:
* Responsible for quality control review of project cost estimates including consistency with KCI estimating standards, completeness, organization and appropriate assignment of activities and productivities.
* Work closely with the Practice Leader and Regional Practice Leader on maintaining existing cost estimating libraries and templates
* Assist with Marketing/Business Development by identifying new project and client opportunities for KCI cost estimating group and assisting in the development of client proposals as needed
* Participation in Estimate Reconciliation meetings and support estimating staff members.
* Take on Lead Estimator role on projects when necessary and lead team of estimators, assign duties, monitor progress, interface with client.
* Take on Senior Estimator role on projects when necessary by developing costs for assigned items in HCSS.
* Collaborate with estimating team members to brainstorm and develop cost effective solutions to project challenges.
* Assist in the preparation and review of CPM project schedules.
* Analyze and evaluate quotes from subcontractors and vendors to ensure competitive pricing and scope alignment.
* Identify project risks and opportunities, quantify, assign costs, schedule impacts and develop strategies to mitigate.
* Stay updated on industry trends, construction costs, and emerging technologies.
* Mentor junior estimators and provide guidance on best practices for cost estimation.
* Complete all tasks on time and within budget while fully meeting project scope.
* Achieve or exceed budgets individual utilization targets.
* Comply with all KCI policies and procedures.
* Ensure projects comply with ISO standards.
* Conduct and submit timely annual Employee Performance Appraisals for assigned staff.

Qualifications

Education and/or Skills Required:
* Minimum of 15 years of contractor experience within the heavy civil industry.
* Minimum of 3 years of Contractor field experience required.
* Bachelor's degree Civil Engineering, Construction Management or related field.
* Proven track record of successfully estimating large-scale infrastructure projects for contractor.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
* Proficiency in cost estimating software (HCSS HeavyBid or similar).
* Proven leadership and team management skills.
* Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
* Good communication and technical writing skills.
* Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
* Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
* Strong problem-solving skills and ability to think critically.

Education and/or Work Experience Preferred:
* Working knowledge of Primavera P6 scheduling software.
* Experience working for heavy civil contractors in the field on projects.
* Working knowledge of industry quantity takeoff software (Bluebeam Revu or similar)
