Organizational Unit Overview
The East Carolina University Center for Telepsychiatry and e-Behavioral Health (CTeBH) is the home for the North Carolina Statewide Telepsychiatry Program (NC-STeP), a legislatively mandated and funded program that connects more than 35 hospital emergency departments and 30 community sites which include health departments , rural primary care and pediatric clinics across the state of North Carolina to provide psychiatric assessments and consultations to patients linked using telemedicine technologies. The CTeBH strives to increase access to care and is actively engaged in helping our field effectively deal with the lack of access that can sometimes force patients to travel long distances to obtain mental health services, or forgo such services altogether.
Job Duties
The purpose of this position in the Center for Telepsychiatry and e-Behavioral Health (CTeBH) is to provide a full range of psychiatric services to patients and their families, including, but not limited to:

  • Perform comprehensive psychiatric evaluation including a comprehensive mental status examination.
  • Order, conduct, and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests.
  • Diagnose psychiatric disorders based on DSM-IV-R criteria.
  • Plan treatment in collaboration with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Provide indicated treatments based on scientific and evidence-based principles, using, but not limited to, the following interventions: prescribing pharmacologic agents, prescribing non-pharmacologic cognitive, behavioral, and other psychotherapies, patient and family education, and referral to other health professional and resources.
  • Documents all relevant data according to clinical and regulatory standards


Duties are performed under the guidelines established by the state board of medical examiners and in collaboration with a licensed physician.

CLINICAL SUPPORT POSITION - NOT SUBJECT TO STATE HUMAN RESOURCES ACT.

Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the UNC Optional Retirement Program ( ORP) which offers matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b, 457). This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers' and State Employees' Retirement System ( TSERS). Additionally, this position offers multiple voluntary options for Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance as well as various supplemental plans including Critical Illness, Flexible Spending Accounts, Cancer, and Disability.
Minimum Education/Experience
Graduation from a physician assistant program approved by the North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners and "approved to practice medical acts" based on education and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners; or graduation from a Nurse Practitioner Program approved by the North Carolina Joint Subcommittee and licensed by the NC Board of Nursing. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
License or Certification required by statute or regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Experience as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner working within an academic psychiatric setting
