Position Summary

The Department of Architecture at the University of New Mexico is currently accepting applications for two Visiting Assistant Professors in Architecture. The position will remain open until filled and will begin in August 2025. This is a non-tenure track temporary appointment, renewable up to three years.

The Position:
The Department of Architecture welcomes candidates with expertise in architectural design and new perspectives in teaching the beginning design student. The successful candidate will have the knowledge and experience to teach and coordinate lower division studios. The candidate will also serve on department and school committees and participate in other department, school, and university activities. Our school thrives when our faculty broadens our perspectives and brings new conversations to our community. The successful candidate will demonstrate a track record of excellence in research, scholarship, and/or creative work including research-based architectural practice. Areas of expertise may include representation, visualization, design and design processes, fabrication and investigation of new technologies, or scholarship of teaching and learning.

The School of Architecture + Planning:
UNM Architecture teaches and inspires architects to respond critically to the urgencies of the present and the promises of a more sustainable and equitable future. The department supports the work of our award-winning faculty, students, and scholars to investigate the architectural systems and social forces that define sustainable built environments at the highest levels of academia and practice. UNM Architecture strives to be a model of radically accessible and affordable public architectural education. The U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard has ranked UNM Architecture #3 for affordability in the U.S. among universities that have a bachelor and/or Master of Architecture degree programs. The Department of Architecture is housed in the award-winning George Pearl Hall, designed by architect Antoine Predock, along with the departments of Landscape Architecture, and Community and Regional Planning, and graduate programs in Historic Preservation and Regionalism. The spacious facilities have the latest design and fabrication tools, including various methods of digital fabrication and other modes of making. The Department of Architecture offers a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture, a professionally accredited Master of Architecture, and non-professional Master of Science in Architecture degrees. In addition to these degree programs, The School of Architecture and Planning also hosts three community-focused research centers: The Design and Planning Assistance Center (DPAC), Research Center for Raza Planning (RCRP), and the Indigenous Design + Planning Institute (iD+Pi).

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

1. A Master of Architecture degree or other relevant degree (depending on the course content)

2. Teaching Experience or Teaching Training at the Undergraduate or Master Levels

Preferred Qualifications:

1. A demonstrated record of design excellence commensurate with experience.

2. Evidence of Scholarship, and/or innovative research or design, as demonstrated by publications, workshops, conference participation, and other design and/or research outcomes.

3. A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
