Deputy Program Manager: Software Engineering Subject Matter Expertise Program

The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is seeking a Deputy Program Manager (PM) to help lead an SDL team to provide overall system integration support for a complex military development program with our C4ISR Division.

The government is developing a new satellite control and data management system for a family of surveillance satellites. SDL is on contract to evaluate the software products delivered by the government's prime contractor and to understand what they are being sold and how to improve it. To accomplish this, SDL builds hands-on experience with the customer's in-development software and other technologies available to deliver the customer's required capabilities.

The primary duties of the Deputy PM sought will be customer coordination, SDL team coordination, and support to lead PM on all management activities. Coordination with the customer and team is summarized as seeking to understand written and unwritten customer objectives, working with the program technical team to design engineering activities that will meet customer objectives, and working with the technical team to report their efforts in a way the customer can directly apply them to advance their objectives. The scope of all management duties includes program costs and funding, schedule of SDL engineering efforts, and technical content and context of SDL efforts.
The ideal candidate will:

  • Have experience coordinating with government customers to identify, decompose, and meet requirements
  • Have experience executing government software development programs at SDL in a management or engineering role
  • Have a desire to build a career in Program Management at SDL
This position will be based in North Logan, UT.

Roles and responsibilities associated with this position:
Works in collaboration with the lead PM to:
  • Understand and address customer needs and issues, usually by direct interface
  • Develop and nourish a strong partner relationship with the customer program management and engineering leadership teams
  • Ensure the SDL technical team has clear deliverables, with clear deadlines, aligned with customer objectives
  • Assemble and direct SDL resources toward execution of the contract
  • Identify, track, avoid, and mitigate risks
  • Trade issues of scope, approach, cost, and schedule
This position requires occasional short-term travel. Generally, travel is infrequent, is within the US, and is for short durations (less than 1 week).

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree (Masters preferred) in a technical or business field - with demonstrated applicability to the program description and position roles/responsibilities provide above
  • Five or more years' experience as a technical team leader - with demonstrated ability to organize and manage a team of personnel, develop project schedules, and control team resources to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to understand complex technical issues, translate them to workable tasks, and guide technical discussions and decisions
  • Desire to pursue a career in Program Management at SDL
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Security Clearance
  • Ability to travel as described above

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Active security clearance
  • Bachelor's degree (Masters preferred) in software engineering

*Salary Range
  • $78,000-$132,000
    • Salary commensurate based on education and experience
