The Opportunity:

Okta is seeking a visionary and experienced technology leader to join our Business Technology leadership team as the VP, Engineering Shared Services. This is a critical, newly created role responsible for building, scaling, and leading the core platforms and capabilities that underpin our internal technology ecosystem. You will own the strategy and execution for our existing Integrations, Automation, and DevSecOps functions, while also pioneering our internal AI initiatives by building a new dedicated team. Furthermore, this leader will define and execute Okta's BT strategy for India, including hiring senior leadership and establishing multiple development teams.

This role requires a blend of deep technical expertise, strategic thinking, operational rigor, and exceptional leadership skills to drive innovation and efficiency across Okta's internal operations.

What you'll be doing:



  • Leadership & Strategy:


    • Lead, mentor, and grow a global team of engineers, architects, and managers responsible for shared services platforms and practices.
    • Define and execute the multi-year strategic roadmap for Engineering Shared Services, aligning with overall BT and Okta objectives.

      • Develop and implement the strategy for establishing and scaling Okta's Business Technology presence in India.


      • Platform Ownership & Engineering Excellence:


        • Oversee the architecture, development, deployment, and operation of critical shared platforms, including Integration Platforms (iPaaS), Automation frameworks, and DevSecOps toolchains.
        • Champion and implement modern development practices (Agile, CI/CD, Infrastructure-as-Code, Observability) across BT engineering teams.
        • Ensure the reliability, scalability, security, and cost-effectiveness of all shared services platforms.


      • AI Innovation:


        • Build and lead a new AI/ML team within BT, establishing the vision, strategy, and roadmap for leveraging AI to enhance internal processes and capabilities.
        • Identify high-impact AI use cases in partnership with business stakeholders and drive their successful implementation.
        • Stay abreast of the latest AI trends and technologies, guiding Okta's internal adoption.


      • India Expansion:


        • Define the operating model, organizational structure, and hiring plan for BT India.
        • Recruit, hire, and onboard a Sr. Director to lead the BT India site.
        • Oversee the establishment and growth of multiple high-performing BT development teams in India, fostering a strong connection to the global BT organization and Okta culture.


      • Collaboration & Operations:


        • Partner closely with other BT leaders (Applications, Infrastructure, Security, PMO) and key business stakeholders across Okta to ensure alignment and deliver impactful solutions.
        • Manage budgets, vendor relationships, and resource allocation for the Engineering Shared Services domain.
        • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, transparency, and continuous improvement within your organization.



      What you'll bring to the role:



      • Experience: 15+ years of progressive leadership experience in IT and Software Engineering, with a significant portion spent managing engineering teams and platforms within a dynamic, technology-driven company.
      • Global Leadership: Proven track record of building, leading, and scaling high-performing, geographically distributed engineering teams, including experience managing managers. Specific experience establishing or significantly scaling offshore development centers, particularly in India, is essential.
      • Technical Depth: Deep understanding and practical experience with:


        • Modern integration patterns and platforms (e.g., iPaaS like MuleSoft, Workato, Boomi; API Management; Event-Driven Architecture).
        • Automation technologies (e.g., RPA, Scripting, Workflow Engines)

          • DevSecOps principles and tooling.
          • Cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).


          • AI Acumen: Recent, demonstrable experience in developing AI strategy, building AI teams, or implementing AI/ML solutions within an enterprise setting. Understanding of AI/ML concepts, platforms, and use cases relevant to business process optimization.
          • Modern Development Practices: Strong background in Agile methodologies and driving DevOps/DevSecOps transformations.
          • Strategic & Communication Skills: Exceptional strategic thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities. Excellent communication, presentation, and influencing skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, including executive leadership.
          • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience). A Master's degree is preferred.

The annual base salary range for this position for candidates located in the San Francisco Bay area is between:
$310,000 $466,000 USD

Below is the annual base salary range for candidates located in California, Colorado, New York and Washington. Your actual base salary will depend on factors such as your skills, qualifications, experience, and work location. In addition, Okta offers equity (where applicable), bonus, and benefits, including health, dental and vision insurance, 401(k), flexible spending account, and paid leave (including PTO and parental leave) in accordance with our applicable plans and policies. The annual base salary range for this position for candidates located in California (excluding San Francisco Bay Area), Colorado, New York, and Washington is between:
$277,000 $415,000 USD
