Position Overview

The Sr. Principal, Rare Disease Strategy Director works with business owners to define and lead the rare disease product lifecycle. In collaboration with commercial and strategic leaders across the enterprise, this position drives the mid- to long-term strategic development of the rare disease portfolio of products and services. In close collaboration with the Rare Disease Commercial team, the Sr. Principal, Rare Disease Strategy Director is responsible for developing and maintaining the product lifecycle and roadmaps for all rare disease offerings. This will require obtaining voice of customer (VOC) research, assessing market opportunities (including financial model), understanding customer requirements, and staying abreast of the competitive landscape in order to develop compelling business cases to invest resources to gain share of the rare disease market. This role will be responsible for understanding the broader needs of the business when defining and making product decisions.

To be successful in this role, the Sr. Principal, Rare Disease Strategy Director must develop and maintain strong internal relationships across the company, working closely with business strategy and commercial teams to understand market needs and broader portfolio strategies. In order to meet program objectives, this individual will closely collaborate with team members from Lab, R&D, Clinical, IT, Customer Experience, Operations, Finance, Regulatory, Reimbursement, Legal, Sales/Marketing, and Commercial.

This is a highly visible role that will require collaborating with and influencing varying levels of internal and external partners. This position requires a strong team-focused approach and giving high-visibility presentations to drive progress, key milestones, and alignment across the organization.

Essential Duties

Include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Lead the definition of the rare disease portfolio of products and services and maximize its value by developing and maintaining long-term business plans including multi-generational product roadmaps and strategic P&Ls supported by robust business rationales. Collaborate with business leaders to set portfolio strategy.
  • Lead through influence to prioritize opportunities to build, cultivate, and maintain Exact Sciences' rare disease business while establishing the business case to inform further project and resource investments.
  • In partnership with key stakeholders, oversee the successful execution of product timeline, determination of business-critical program milestones, and confirmation of inclusion and impact to program timelines. Plan aspects include, but are not limited to, evidence generation, indications and/or geographic expansion, market entry strategy, and partner collaboration opportunities.
  • Synthesize key market and clinical trends, customer needs, and competitive offerings to develop differentiated product roadmaps, new product features and functionalities, supportive solutions and services, and recommendations for investments to support product growth.
  • Provide robust financial analysis in assessing market opportunities and developing business cases for new product concepts.
  • Develop and deliver compelling presentations to convey portfolio and program strategies and/or facilitate key decisions to a broad set of stakeholders to include senior executives.
  • Contribute to multiple workstreams (i.e., financial, commercial, operational, product development, clinical) within program and special project(s) outside of direct program.
  • Delegate effectively to other functions to meet program goals and deadlines; motivate and lead teams of cross-functional resources in a matrixed organization with competing priorities, with or without direct authority or reporting relationships.
  • Build and cultivate relationships, and consistently and appropriately communicate clearly and frequently with various audiences at all levels of the organization including, but not limited to, corporate strategy team members, project team members (core and extended), functional managers, commercial organization, key opinion leaders, stakeholders, and partners.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Scientific discipline, or field related to the essential duties of the job.
  • 13+ years of experience working in a team setting in healthcare, biopharma, medical device, or technology fields with experience in two or more of the following: strategic planning, business development, product development, product lifecycle management, operations management, and/or commercialization including sales or marketing.
  • 5+ years of supervisory or project team lead experience with demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and train team members effectively.
  • 5+ years of experience with US and global regulated environments.
  • Successful track record of achieving product line and company goals in a high-growth and highly competitive healthcare field.
  • Demonstrated rare disease product strategy knowledge, with direct experience with most aspects of the product lifecycle.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong working relationships as a leader and peer with other senior leaders/functional managers.
  • Demonstrated capability in leading the successful development and commercialization of complex products and solutions in new emerging and poorly defined high-growth areas, leading to fast and sustainable growth.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively translate a large amount of complex customer, clinical, market, and technical data from multiple sources into a clear value proposition and compelling story that can be articulated and communicated to a diverse range of customer and internal audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively and quickly understand and incorporate new technologies, such as clinical informatics, mobile platforms, and big data to provide a clear competitive advantage to existing portfolios and create opportunities for new products and services.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive clinical adoption and reimbursement of value-based diagnostics through clinical and economic impact studies.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Business Administration, Scientific discipline, or field related to the essential duties of the job.
  • 15+ years of experience working in a team setting in healthcare, biopharma, medical device, or technology fields with experience in two or more of the following: strategic planning, business development, product development, product lifecycle management, operations management, and/or commercialization including sales or marketing.

Salary Range:

$174,000.00 - $277,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - WI - Madison on a full-time basis. In addition, this position is bonus eligible, and is eligible to be considered for company stock at hire and on an annual basis.
