Short Description

The Phlebotomy Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily phlebotomy operations for both in-house and outreach services, including long-term care facilities. This role ensures high-quality, patient-centered care through effective team leadership, scheduling, training, and compliance with regulatory and hospital standards. The supervisor will coordinate closely with nursing, laboratory, client services, and outreach teams to support efficient and accurate specimen collection and transport. The supervisor will work an assigned shift/location as necessary. Supervise the Phlebotomy Coordinator and be responsible for supervisor on-call rotation.

  • Supervise a team of phlebotomists across hospital and outreach sites.
  • Manage scheduling, timekeeping, and coverage plans, ensuring 7-day service operations including early morning nursing home routes.
  • Provide regular performance feedback, conduct evaluations, and support employee development.
  • Train new hires and maintain ongoing competency assessments for all phlebotomy staff.
  • Ensure adherence to specimen collection protocols, patient identification, and proper documentation.
  • Maintain compliance with CAP, CLIA, Joint Commission, and OSHA standards.
  • Ensure infection control, specimen integrity, and chain of custody practices are followed.
  • Work closely with lab management, client service reps, nursing staff, and courier to troubleshoot collection issues or delays.
  • Oversee supplies, route planning, and equipment for mobile phlebotomy.
  • Monitor specimen rejection rates and turnaround times; initiate corrective actions as needed.
  • Participate in quality assurance initiatives and audits.

Experience Required

  • Minimum 3 years of hospital-based and outreach phlebotomy experience
  • Minimum 3 years in a lead or supervisory role.
  • Supervisory or management experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Strong leadership, communication, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in LIS/EMR systems (e.g., Sunquest, Epic, Orchard Copia) a plus.

Education Requirements

  • High School Diploma required
  • Associate's or bachelor's in health sciences preferred.

License/Certification Requirements

  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (e.g., ASCP, NHA) preferred.
